  • There is always the option of buying some cheap (but good) Mavic CXP21/22s, some alu primer and satin black spray paint.

I did that for a cheap wheel build. They're still fine.

  • mavic open sports and cxp22 come in black. cxp22 are excellent rims, i have never ridden open sports but i think they are the replacement for mavic ma3 which for budget rims were better than decent.

  • ^i think they're both with machined sidewalls, right?

  • Yep, shiny silver sidewalls

  • yeah, it's not an easy job...just go with disc 29rs or get some silver ones powder coated

  • 29ers are gonna make the tyre all stretched out and fat, plus it'll be a bit dodgy with the high pressure I would've thought

  • Maybe Ambrosio Excursions fit the bill? They're cheap aswell.

  • Right. I think I'm going to go for open pro cd's, they're quite dear but they'll be fairly strong and pretty light as well. Ideally I'd like to get the halo freedoms but they're just too wide.

Thanks for the help everyone, very much appreciated.
I suppose it's good that this thread exists, hopefully it'll be helpful for people in the future who are looking for a similar type of rim.

The braking surface looks suspiciously like it''s silver

  • Here's a pic of them fitted. Looks like all black to me.

  • I love those!! where can I get them online?

  • I take it back Milanza, they're as black as the night. Nice looking as well

  • Here's a better picture. Not actually bought the open pros yet, these ambrosio excursions are swaying me

  • where to find them online?

  • I've found somewhere that sells them, just waiting on an email back letting me know if they've got any in stock

  • I'm going for open pros, they look a bit cleaner and I've ridden open sports for ages and they've taken a real beating and always been fine, so open pros should be even better. Plus they aren;t that much more than the Ambrosio Excursions.

  • Worth pointing out that Open Pro CDs are not black. They are grey with a hint of brown in it, quite a strange colour and certainly doesn't match black components.

Better than horrible silver braking surfaces though...

That's what I thought. However after a long session on google images last night I found quite a few pictures of open pro cds built up and a lot look dark black rather than grey.
    There are some misleading photos.

  • ^ thats a lovely finish

  • @sorethroat - whereabouts are you based? I've those Open Pro rims on my commuting bike if you want to see them in the flesh.

  • Hi Andy, I'm based in Borough, would be good to get a look at them.

Are they as grey as they seem in some photos? Or black like they seem in others??

  • I'd say the bottom photo in post #69 shows the colour best.

I work less than half a mile from you, near Waterloo. Are you around tomorrow?

  • I have had a few sets of Open Pro CD and they are definitely not black as in the photos. Not sure if the ceramic version is black but that is many £££'s
The closest to how they actually are on my screen is that shot of just the rim you have against the white background.

  • Bollocks!!!!

Don't worry about it Andy, if they aren't black and a kind of dark grey then I don't think that they'll suit the build. Thanks though.
Very glad that it was too late to call allterraincycles last night, I would've made a big mistake. Fingers crossed for the excursions being in stock.
