• Try here for an overview.

  • But it's only a wheel-truing I need, maybe a spoke replacement. Not worth it.

  • You could write a letter to the driver explaining that although you're not going to be taking any legal action or claiming against insurance, you have had to spend money to correct a problem he caused. Also, you can explain (nicely) that it could've been more expensive and he should think twice before hitting a cyclist again in his death wagon.

  • Of course it's worth it. Have you forgotten how expensive Ksyriums are these days? And you can't just take your bike to Halfrauds for a truing, this is a job for a professional, an expensive professional.

  • Oliver was very helpful, but my case isn't worth taking on - no personal injury. He told me how I could make an insurance claim but I don't think it'll be worth my time. Looks like I'll be paying to true the wheel and he'll get off completely without repercussion.

But it's only a wheel-truing I need, maybe a spoke replacement. Not worth it.

What outcome would suit you then?

  • Ideally? TfL whisk into the office with a time machine, go back a few weeks, and instruct the driver to pay more bloody attention to the road.

Excluding that, the police pop round, get him to cough up for a new wheel and give me an apology.

Excluding that (as it seems I must), I'm just going to sulk about it.

  • I'll true it for £587.

  • Plus parts.

  • Plus parts.

    Like a bike shop?

  • Just like one, except I'll charge obscene amounts that you get to pass on to the guy that hit you. Everyone's a winner, except him, but that's the point really.

  • Ah, no, I meant "like a bike shop" as in, you'll need to add the purchase price of a bike shop to the list of materials. You'll need somewhere to do the work...

  • This is true, my workshop or the bikeshop I work in are highly unsuitable, I'll hire some people to look into quotes for warehouse space and suchlike.

  • In light of the ever increasing risk of flooding I would recommend a floating bikeshop.

  • My basement did flood and the water was well within 1 floor of the workshop, a very good call. Not only should it float on water, but in the sky.

  • Excluding that, the police pop round, get him to cough up for a new wheel
You don't need the police to do that, nor is it their job, or withing their authority.

  • This morning I left the house for the first time in 2 days, and within 300 fucking metres of my house some chunt drove his battered old POC car straight at me, meaning I had to throw myself onto the pavement to avoid being hit. This was on my road, which is pretty residential, with cars parked down one side of the road (their side... so I had right of way) meaning that cars can’t pass each other but it’s more than feasible for a bike to pass a car, so long as the car driver isn’t a homicidal fuckwit and swerves towards the cyclist.

I was too surprised to make a note of the car registration but I was THIS close to turning round and going back home to bed.

  • Keep an eye out - maybe the driver is local?

  • I think it must be national be a cunt to cyclists day or something. I went out to run some errands, riding exactly how I always do in places I often ride, except today in the about 45 minutes riding:

    • several times people started revving or beeping and getting right on my rear wheel in slowish traffic
    • 4 or 5 people pulled in on me and forced me out of primary position (including a couple of times where I had to slow down not to get hit)
    • a van driver pulled out of a side road as I was passing in front of it and made me swerve into the next lane so as not to get hit
    • a taxi driver started pulling into me while I was trackstanding in a queue waiting to turn right, and seemed fairly set on physically pushing me out of the way until I started threatening him through his open window

I swear if anybody fucks with me when I go out later I am removing their wing mirrors.

  • Keep an eye out - maybe the driver is local?

Almost definitely - acting like a complete bellend is basically a prerequisite for living on my street.

  • Well, where do I start? Was he a dangerous driver? Not really, but he most certainly was a mental one. I just came out from Brick lane, the bagel shops end, cut onto the Bethnal Green Road, as I was approaching a red light, I filtered to the front, stopped on the left side in front of a HGV, I had done nothing wrong at that stage, I didn't filter dangerously - there was at least 2 meter gap for me to cycle pass the HGV and I stopped where I was supposed to. he then started finger pointing at me and mouthing off. I thought I best ignore him. He then start rolling into the ASL, as he was getting closer to me, I felt the need to respond to him, he then lowered his window and repeatedly said the following:

"Don't jump the red light again, I have been watching you, don't you jump the red light, I am watching."
"Don't pass by on my left side, I am watching you..."

Well first, I didn't jump any red light, there was no red light to jump other then that traffic light where I stopped. And I didn't pass through him dangerously, like I said, there was at least 2 meters gap and the traffic was stationary.

So I responded to him that there was more than enough gap for anyone to go through and that he shouldn't be rolling into the cycle box and that he was in the wrong. He repeated that "I am watching you..." shit... I would have jumped the red light if I could at that point as he managed to leave me very little space, but there was a big busy juction in front... drivers never stop to amaze me and I wish I had my bike camera with me (I blame Evans for running out of stock of the one I ordered...)

  • Yeah tbh the best thing in this situation is to jump the red light, although the temptation to do so into heavy oncoming traffic is not a healthy one.

  • Thinking about it now, I probably should have gotten off my bike and got onto the pavement to cross the junction on foot.

  • OK - the motorist has won.

I am not riding my bike anymore as it is too dangerous.

Oh, and btw - I am serious.

  • My run of bad luck continues as I was hit by a taxi this morning! I’m not hurt, just a bit pissed off. It was completely his fault and he didn’t even respond to my most plaintive “why are you trying to kill me?” face.

Luckily this time I have the registration. Complainy email coming right up.

  • Good work. Tell them you might have to go to hospital because your neck hurts a bit.
