• ^^It is not a good idea to bend the truth where the police are concerned.
Except where the police are bending the truth, or except where it makes their lives easier, or except where is gives them a better sanctioned detection, or etc...

The police will be much less inclined to do anything if cyclists are perceived to make shit up to suit them.
Were Cyclists a single gestalt entity, and the police too, for that matter, then yes. Otherwise, no.

The sad fact is that integrity and honesty will not get you far with the police, whether you're a victim or accused of a crime.

The police aren't concerned with the truth, but with what is verifiable, and only what is easily verifiable at that (unless, of course, there is political capital to be made).#

    tl;dr Fuck tha police.

  • It is meaningless bollocks, but it doesn't mean we should break the law in order to get attention.

    Tell that to:

    • Suffragettes.
    • Rosa Parks.
    • Anyone involved in the Arab Spring.

And yes our cause is just as valid as years of oppression, torture and slavery.

(There may be some exaggeration above...)

  • The police will be much less inclined to do anything if cyclists are perceived to make shit up to suit them.

Just to be clear, I agree with your sentiment. If "cyclists make up their reports" becomes a trope then it will just be another excuse the met use to not do anything.

I was just being pessimistic about the odds of anything being done about this arsehole.

  • Now, is reporting to Roadsafe the same as reporting to the police?
No. Roadsafe is about gathering intelligence not starting a prosecution. It may be worth reporting this incident directly to the police as well as to Roadsafe but they will not take any action because:

    • there is no corroborating evidence
    • no one was injured
    • there was no serious damage
Unfortunately this level of illegal driving is too low a priority for the police to investigate especially as they are facing 10-15% cuts in everything now the Olympics are over.

Please let us know what reply you get from the lorry company, if you get a brush off or no reply within a week let us know and we at LCC will have a go at them.

The police are questioning the future of Roadsafe because only cyclists use it regularly and they are not getting information about other bad behaviour. We are pushing them to use the information better to build up a picture of how bad driving threatens us all the time and also to publicise Roadsafe so it gets wider use.

  • Email sent...
Let's see what they come back with, if owt at all.

I got a reply within minutes from the general manager and have been emailing him this morning.
He seems genuine in his concern and tells me he has opened an internal investigation.

    Let's see where this goes

  • Great stuff WJP. Good letter from what I can see (I only skimmed it) but well done. Please suggest cycle training for the drivers so they might understand why riders may need to occupy 'the middle' when they see fit. It's good pr for them to do it and be seen to do something.

Cyclist Inconveniences Met Policeman BU60BZL - YouTube

Bit of a dreg from a couple of weeks back, but came across this forum which gives the attitude from the other side

  • interesting, thanks

  • I like how they discuss it as though the cyclist HAS to be in the bus lane. pretty sure there's no law against cycling in the normal road lane, despite how annoying they may find it.

  • Anything on the road should be in the left-most lane except for a few specific circumstances. One of which is turning right, which the cyclist was doing according to the description for the video (even says he was indicating, which seems a bit odd since he was bloody miles from the junction). Not one post on the police forum seemed to notice that.

You're also allowed to undertake someone indicating to turn right, so in that respect the driver did nothing wrong. However, the manner in which he undertook was piss-poor, perfectly matched by his attitude when pulled up on it.

To be honest I don't understand why he didn't move into the left hand lane. It didn't look busy and I can't imagine he'd have had any problems getting back across to turn right. Hard to tell, since after passing the bus he never bothered looking back anyway.

A bit shit all round really.

  • Got deliberately rammed from behind at traffic lights as they turned green this morning. By an aggressive horrible man, straight onto 999, as was the bus driver and witnesses, and then went to a station to report it.

Not one to be afraid, but this could have put a lot of nice people of cycling.

Did you get the guy's car reg? Did the police turn up? Good that the bus driver and others were helpful.

I've said it before - if you can't be responsible with a car, your license should be revoked until you can show that you can be, i.e. pass the test again. Should be no allowances whatsoever for this sort of thing. I have children and I hate to think they are out there with these people driving cars around in the same town.

  • Yup got everything. As did the bus driver, all reported and a request for him to be stopped went out right away. Police didn't turn up, the station was only half a mile further up my commute so just went there. Wouldn't have been any point in coming, he drove off right away, trying to get me under him in the process.

Will fill the forms out and drop them back off. Hope something comes of it.

  • Good, sounds like you are alright...? Did he stop moving forwards, or did you have to pull your bike and self out of his way? Why did he do it, did you take, like, half a second to sprint off after the light turned amber/green?

  • I'm fine. i just pulled myself out of his way as quick as possible.
Not sure, at the previous lights he was beeping before they'd gone green and then came past about 10cm from me. These lights I was position infant of him, so he couldn't zap past me and try to knock me off. I turn around and threw my hands in the air and asked what he had been beeping for, so he started shouting and swearing out of his window. Turned around as I couldn't be bothered with an idiot did then as the lights change I hear him revving and then slamming into me, so I get out of his way and phone the police.

    Silly little man.

  • Yep, silly little man is about right.

  • Wac indeed, although putting yourself directly in front of someone who's already demonstrated themselves to be angry and aggressive seems a little daft.

  • Hindsight is a beautiful thing.

  • What is "wac"?

  • 'what Andrew cwestions' :)

  • OK, I'll google it.

  • Oh, something to do with James Hunt apparently.

  • ^ ha!
