• As bad as plane and train spotting. At least there's a decent variation in buses

  • snowflake spotting, s'all about the variation

  • Bus spotting?

Fair enough - each to their own I guess.

  • Why are we moaning about it when it got us this useful little information?

  • Because it's weird, weird and useful.

  • Since when bus spotting have suddenly been strange? was it not strange for the last 100 years since the invention of buses?

    it was and it is

As bad as plane and train spotting. At least there's a decent variation in buses

Ed's just worried that they'll come for the bike spotters next.

  • It is next level wierd.

  • he drove at me (again!) and threatened me with a f....ing screwdriver!

I can deal with shite drivers, but people deliberately driving at you, that's another thing entirely.

No witnesses, no proof. Pretty much pointless to report, eh?

report it before he kills someone..

This. I have a pretty high tolerance for nutter behavior but that's way way over the line.

Like so many folk on here :)

  • Laws forbidding the harassment of cyclists

In the US rather than here, but sounds like a great idea on the face of it. Anyone know if there have been successful cases over there, or thoughts on whether it'd be better than making reports to 'roadsafe' over here?

Bristol bus driver Gavin Hill who drove into cyclist jailed

  • I can never understand how "a moment of madness" can ever be used as a defence.

  • Wow, that's excessive and I am so glad the CCTV caught it.

moment of madness my arse, he's not king fucking george.

  • No, he was driving a bus.

Seventeen months doesn't seem long enough though.

  • ...or in other words, they've been inundated with reports from aggrieved cyclists, and are no longer interested since it's one word against the other and with no actual evidence either way, completely pointless following up.

When you go to the next page though and fill in the form, there's a drop down menu about what you're reporting. There's an option for "cycling - near miss"

  • No, he was driving a bus.

It's actually a fairly strict sentence considering he pleaded guilty and was previously of good character. He'll think twice before doing it again now that he's lost his job and will be spending at least 9 months in prison. What's needed to stop more of it happening is not the occasional draconian sentence (which in any case would be appealed), but the consistent following up and prosecution of cases like this. Good to see that he was charged with GBH as well rather than just dangerous driving - too often the vehicle-as-weapon / deliberate assault aspect is ignored.

  • I can never understand how "a moment of madness" can ever be used as a defence.

He pleaded guilty, so he's saying it was 'a moment of madness' as a mitigating circumstance to try to reduce his sentence. Not as a defense against being convicted. This sort of makes sense - he's basically saying that it wasn't premeditated and he hasn't done this sort of thing before, so he should be punished less severely than someone who had.

Absolutely shocking to see though. I've felt like people were bullying me with a vehicle before but nothing close to that CCTV video though! Frightening.

  • I had someone in a Hilux right on my rear wheel today, he got so cross with me staying out of the door zone that he went the wrong side of a traffic island, and then couldn't stay out of the bike lane at the lights. I didn't pass him there, as he seemed a bit of a nutter.

I was worried he might get out and hit me to be honest.

I would haved thought that attempted murder would have been a more appropriate charge.

The Bus driver was verbally abused by the cyclist minutes before - I feel sorry for all involved

  • The Bus driver was verbally abused by the cyclist minutes before - I feel sorry for all involved

Is breaking someone's leg a proportionate response to some verbal abuse?

  • Depends; if you are a bitter and twisted fatty who has to hide his double chin collection under a highly dubious beard and have spent the last 10 years working as a bus driver in Bristol gazing lustfully at all of the attractive young ladies getting on and off the bus all day long while secretly wishing that you could pluck up the courage to talk to them. Well then your life may be shit enough that something as petty as a cyclist verbally abusing you for passing too close to them will push you over the edge.

Doesn't stop you being a gaping disease ridden bucket of an old whore's cunt, it just means that you are lonely as well. Still I'm sure he'll find someone to keep him "company" in prison.

  • Bobbo repped.

I'm sure some of you will mark me down as some frothing reactionary, but I don't see why a serious and potentially lethal assault like this should be punishable by less than a year in prison. The fact it's on the road and involves a cyclist isn't what makes me think this, I'd hold the same view on any assault that resulted in someone being permenantly injured, as this apparently did.

And what possible argument can there be for letting someone who behaves like this ever drive again?
