  • believe it or not my induction to riding in a proper tight group was the torrential downpour DD of a couple of years ago. a baptism of firerain but i didn't have any problems apart from wanting to be anywhere else but outside in a downpour at 3am

Ah yes, I think I remember, it did rain a bit.

  • Oliver I must take issue with you constantly saying that anyone can do this ride, its a fuck of a long ride, certainly the longest forum ride, it like riding to Brighton and back so people need to seriously think about this ride and prepare for it.

It's 120 miles you need to have ridden at least 70-80 and it's overnight, when you have already spent your days energy and you body is telling you that it needs sleep.

Ed, if you knew some of the people I knew who have successfully completed it, you'd easily feel as justified as I do in saying that. :)

I agree that many of these people wouldn't be able to do it all on their own, but the magic of the DD (for weaker riders) is how much the company helps. You always hear stories of complete strangers helping each other out and making new friends, etc.

Of course people should prepare--did I say that people should come completely unprepared, like wanting to ride to Sainsbury's on the day and being swept up in a wave of riders going to somewhere completely different? Don't think I did. ;)

On the subject of preparedness, it's worth linking to the Southwark Cyclists FAQ on every page:

I loved that DD. 2003 = my first and still the best, wonderful memories. 2004 = bonked, learned a lot. 2005 = didn't ride owing to knee injury. 2006 = epic tailwind, super fast. 2007 = decent tailwind and still quite fast (we were only caught by the rain around halfway through the second leg and it didn't matter much; it still seemed quite warm while we were riding and somehow it was just a great edition--I'd done the Exmouth Exodus earlier that year and it was much wetter and stormier than the DD). 2008 = fairly nondescript DD. 2009 = absolutely massive turnout and scuppered ride back.

    I love the DD.

No it's not, I'm liable to delete your posts if you do that.

And I agree with small furry in that individuals who are riding should prepare. Why? Because unless you're volunteering to assist and support everyone who thinks this is possible because Oliver said so, then you really do want them to come prepared, to do some long rides in advance and to think about what riding 120 miles at night means. One of things about this ride is that it's under your own steam and without support, so people had better take responsibility for their own preparedness and not under-estimate what riding 120 miles overnight without support means.

Or we could just start a LFGSS hashtag: #itsalloliversfault

  • Perhaps Oliver could arrange to ride a broom cargo bike and pick up all the stragglers and their bikes?

  • On a serious note, I should be fit enough for this but, even at peak fitness I am not the swiftest. If any others would like to form a mutually supportive slow group- riding in rotation or at least through and off and stopping for punctures etc - I would be proud to ride with them.

  • Totally with you in the slow but steady group Clive.

The longest ride I did was 70 miles too high a gear and too fast. I'll have gears for this. I think I can manage this if I kip all afternoon and have a big plate of sausage pasta an hour or so before. The good thing is that at least some of the later stretch will be on fairly familiar roads. I love the thermos idea.
And I have just been reminded to get some proper lights.

  • No it's not, I'm liable to delete your posts if you do that.

I didn't mean that suggestion literally. It's a decent source of information on the DD.

I'm not too sure where people get the strange idea from that I think riders shouldn't prepare? Of course they should. I obviously don't mean that people should just turn up clueless and expect others to bail them out, either. But on the DD, you will be very likely to find assistance from people you're riding with--it's just how it works. This doesn't apply to catastrophic bike failures that can't be sorted out on the road, or if you get completely lost and go off the route where no-one can find you.

    From the Southwark Cyclists FAQ:

What happens if my bike or I break down?

There's no following magic bus to sweep you up or mend your bike but fellow riders can often work wonders. The ride is unsupported. You are on your own. If you're in trouble, expect help from fellow riders. But if you just get too tired or a knee gives out or whatever, then you'll have to find a lift or cab to get you to the nearest station.

(Also, while the ride is unsupported, there is a rider whose job it is to be last on the road to sweep up or at least be aware of any problems that may have got people left behind. Not quite a broomwagon that can whisk you away, but a backstop of sorts.)

  • Totally with you in the slow but steady group Clive.

Exactly--slow but steady is fine and is actually the best way of enjoying the ride. The main gripe from experienced riders is that the ride is over too quickly, so seasoned advice is that you want to stretch it. :)

  • i'm so excited.

there are no direct trains from liverpool st on saturday to darsham.
this is somewhat disappointing as 'er indoors was getting the train that day.

  • Exactly--slow but steady is fine and is actually the best way of enjoying the ride. The main gripe from experienced riders is that the ride is over too quickly, so seasoned advice is that you want to stretch it. :)

Experience and speed are not synonymous.

  • I did the DD on a mountain bike that was too small for me with not too much in the way of miles...the last few miles took everything I had but do think there's a lot to be said for the power of the peloton for keeping you going through the dark hours in your mind. On arrival at Dunwich the first thought was never again, by the time i was on the bus home, I began to waver on this and have done it twice since and loved it each time...

  • I'm at a wedding that weekend. I thought I removed my name but must have missed it. 17 is free :(

  • Given Oliver's posts up the thread , then does any one new to this want to do a beginer's ride out to Essex?

Happy to drag you out to Epping and beyond . PM if you areinterested and I ll set up a ride .

Regarding preparation, I partly agree with Oliver, I think more newbies complete the DD with less training because they have no choice but to struggle onto the coast otherwise they won't get back. It's also pretty flat.

On the other hand , you can't do it on no miles....

Done this ride 5 times so I guess I'm an experienced rider, but I still don't find the ride is over too quickly, I find about 2 or 3 in the morning I start to wonder what the hell I'm doing out in the middle of knowhere when I could be tucked up in my comfortable bed with a warm wifey. Then it's all worth it when you get to the Flora Cafe!
