fingers fucking crossed i finally get to do this.

  • Joe, anyone with moderate fitness can do the Dunwich Dynamo. People manage it even if they're prepared incredibly badly. They do learn a few things about themselves that they didn't know before, but on the whole they'll be able to overcome that fear of riding long distances on a bicycle that many people have--largely because they've never tried it.

Usual long-distance cycling tips apply--eat and drink in small morsels and sips throughout the ride. Take foods like flapjacks or energy bars. Don't over-eat. (If you over-exert yourself, you won't feel it coming on too easily, but at some point you'll just go 'boom'. You can easily avoid that by continuing to eat and drink. The rule of thumb is that you shouldn't be feeling thirsty; you should have drunk a little bit before that. You lose a lot of fluid on a ride like this, don't underestimate that.) Learn to eat and drink while on the bike (keep food in your rear jersey pockets, bottles on the bike).

Further on the subject of food, these days I would advise people to also take a bit of food with them so they're not stuck when they get to Great Waldingfield and the queue's already 2 1/2 miles long. Last year the demand was just incredible, which with an estimated 900-1,000 riders isn't too surprising. People get going earlier and earlier just to beat that queue. If you've got a little something in your bag, you can avoid that, riding at your leisure, and start feeding when you get there (soup is one of the best things to eat at the mid-point of a ride like this, so a bagged soup would be good if it's not too heavy--last year's tomato soup at the feed was excellent--or a savoury like a couple of samosas).

Don't stop too often. Wear thin layers of clothing that you can adapt to conditions. Take two spare inner tubes, tools, puncture repair kit. make sure your bike is in good nick before the ride--it's unsupported. Find a group that goes at your pace. Don't start out too hard, conserve your energy at first. You'll be riding more smoothly some way into the ride. etc. etc.

The Southwark Cyclists FAQ is more comprehensive:

    http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/content/dunwich-dynamo

Above all, enjoy the ride. It's all worth it for the people you meet on the ride, the smiles, and the feeling at the end. Everyone remembers their first DD. If you don't get everything wrong, you'll have an amazing time just on account of the company.

  • just make sure you've got a good supply of stella artois in your rucksack and you'll be fine

  • how you getting back, julian? riding??

  • I'm considering riding back. Does anyone have any advice for this? My main concern is the sleep deprivation, but I imagine having a snooze at Dunwich is a bad idea - just turn around and head back no?

  • No.

Have a snooze, especially if you're feeling sleepy. Even 10-30 minutes is enough for your brain to have a little recharge and get you going again.

The last 400k, I didn't stop and was trashed at the end of it, practically falling asleep in the saddle. The time before that I had about ten minutes with my head on a truckstop table and once I warmed up again was fine to the finish.

Also a good rest on the muscles will be good for you as well.

  • Further on the subject of food, these days I would advise people to also take a bit of food with them so they're not stuck when they get to Great Waldingfield and the queue's already 2 1/2 miles long. Last year the demand was just incredible, which with an estimated 900-1,000 riders isn't too surprising. People get going earlier and earlier just to beat that queue. If this years van and coach get sorted then there will be the option to collect pre-prepared food at the feed stop without queueing and no need to rush out of London to beat the crowd.

Sideline benefit to this is that you can then leapfrog from one group of riders to the next and make really good progress.

  • just make sure you've got a good supply of red bulls in your rucksack and you'll be fine

  • snooze=sunburn and cramps

  • Fail.

Sun = sunburn and lack of nutrition = cramps.

    Snooze = much needed kipping.

  • @ joe thinking of riding back
did about 40 miles on the sunday last time then jumped on a train but was pretty shattered

a nice full english from the cafe near the beach a quick hour or two nap then back in the saddle for the homeward leg

  • I'm with TSK.. You'll struggle to get sunburn having a little snooze at the beach and as long as you get enough potassium (bananas) in your system then you'll avoid cramps

  • In, the majority of my night riding experience is miserable cold commutes in winter - this sounds like much more fun.
