I'm keeping my eyes open for a comedy...dinner plate
If you were using ⅛" chain, you might be interested in the 65T TA Cyclotouriste that's sitting in my parts bin.
For serious comedic effect, while not a strict geometric solution, any arbitrary curve of constant width should function as a ghost ring since some degree of backlash is necessary at some points in the rotation of any non-unity ratio chain drive in order to accommodate chordal action

Not sure if this mad bargain has been posted here... Sorry @knowthejo if you have done this already...

Never saw it fully built but remember the frame and some stuff you were starting to gather for it, everything very very very beautiful! If we didn't already have a tandem that isn't being used... (although I've ordered the kiddy cranks adapter from sjs yesterday so there's hope...)

Yep!

Looks absolutely incredible.
Got any pics of it built up? -

Does anybody know where to find the geometry for the Thorn explorer tandems? Manege to did find the geometry for the non-tandems, for the tandems my google skills are not sufficient.
Especially interested in the height of both seat tubes and the reach&stack for the front position.

Did you get the kiddy cranks adaptor yet? And how did it go? I'm thinking of going the same route.

I did, but haven't found time to start looking into it... Will post progress when I get to it!

People of Tandem, I'd like your help.
Out riding in Essex today I got it into my head that the way to get my wife out at the same speed as me and my usual riding friends is, of course, a tandem. This popped up, think it's actually the right size too.
Are rim breaks like this alright? Seems most tandems have cantis or something. With a new back wheel, could I just swap out the groupset for something newer like 105? Is the longer cable ok? Any things to think about that I've not?

Just bloody buy it, you know you are going to! Modern rim brakes are (probably) as good as ancient cantis, either way it pays to anticipate your stopping on a tandem. Just lose the godawful Gatorskins.
Ps: it looks great.

@dbr On very hilly terrain you may find rim brakes tiring on your hands. The bike looks lovely: note the torque-arm fixing on the NDS chainstay - that’ll be for the drum drag-brake that the bike would have originally had. The rear hub may even be the original, in which case you might be able to fit a new drag.
@7ven Gad! I will post a pic of my Yates! It’s great.

Yes, as long as you're not going anywhere with big hills. On a tandem, unlike a solo, both brakes are actually useful, because there's always substantial weight on the back wheel.

I've fitted some crank adaptors to my little tandem. They look this (a bit agricultural)
They work well for my 8 and 5 year olds

I’ve only been looking for two hours!
Could be good though. I’d prefer some wild 90s paint and a more modern groupset but by the looks of things on eBay this is pretty up to date. I guess they get modern components when they’re bought by the likes of us and fiddled with.

Then there's this...

Is this the tandem 'anti' thread all of a sudden?
It's now 5 hours, how have you not bought the Jackson yet? Have you no impulse buying genes whatsoever?

woaah^^

Just thinking can you get away with either side of a tandem as 'drive-side' for a photo?
-
• #1471
Well, primary vs final drive
-
• #1472
That's pretty cool!
-
• #1473
Not when it's a straight through drive.

I got the seller or that BJ tandem to send over the geo to check fit. The front end looks ideal for me. Stoker setup is bit off though. Seat tube is good, 500mm, but the reach, even with a 30mm 35º stem is way too short for my wife. The reach (centre top of saddle to centre of bars) on her Brompton is 660mm. The longest I could get it on the tandem would be 530mm. The Brompton isn't exactly an aggressive positon so I'm concerned she'll be pretty compressed, and have a poor view of my back.
From what I've read, the stoker position is often compromised with shorter reach, but this seems too much. Thoughts?

On older tandems, yes, but people coped. If you want a 700mm seat pitch, you're going to be shopping in the 21st Century. The one you're being offered is as long as my trackdem, and we squeezed @umop3pisdn into that space 🙂
Yup!
Though I'm my case there's an EBB which simply doesn't provide enough adjustment when used alone. But I love the floating ring so much I'll keep it even when chain stretch allows me the remove a link and adjust only with the EBB (it's probably at that point already).
It's a 53t Dura Ace 7400 ring but I'm keeping my eyes open for a comedy 55-60t ring to use instead, just as a willy-waving exercise. I can adjust the EBB to use any large ring. Anyone selling a dinner plate please do holla!
