Ok, I am no lawyer. Nor am I a legal expert.
Surely simply the fact that the damage occurred on private property has nothing to do with it, as it was a station, there was an implied right of way. This is the same reason that the postman/bailiff etc can deliver to your front door without trespassing. I would imagine that if there is a visible sign (from where you locked up) saying "at your own risk" etc. then they are covered from responsibility for theft. However, if they removed your bike, without prior warning (i.e. a visible sign informing you that bikes locked here would be removed) then the removal may be illegal, or, failing that, unlawful.

I imagine that the staff at the station make decisions on the spot regarding their immediate surroundings, driven by what they see as the correct thing to do. i.e. using local motives.
