  • Two lovely bikes posted on the last page.

    the pornroller is great http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2007/sept/1/AlexDenham.htm

this is a beauty, I'm sure you could create something similar by following what that dude^ did with his steamroller. even if you ended up with a bike half as attractive as either of them you'd be onto a winner and you'd be safe in the knowledge that you'd have a really solid, hugely versatile bike.

Get a steamroller. There is no alternative.

    big fat +1 to that.

  • 4130 is not exactly standard tubing, especially the butted variety that Surly use.

You forget that Ed is an opinionated cretin who thinks that he knows everything though. Therefore you must be wrong.

ahhhhhhhhh my mistake, damn those bog standard S&M, Fit, FBM, Standard, T-1 bikes that i paid so much money for.....damn their shit tubing..

  • hahaha - so to sum up... there is no alternative!

  • in short it would appear no

  • 55 posts.

  • excellent. londonfgss - 'Derailing threads one post at a time' ;)

...Still not buying one though (maybe)

  • Steamrollers rule, but if you are tall enough to have to turn on a warning light when you go anywhere near an airport, custom frames don't have to cost and oversize arm and leg.

Paul Villiers builds reasonably priced custom frames and is not too far away. Clefty has a nice 853 beast. Not sure how much it cost. Give her a pm.

  • 56 including yours.

  • Prime

  • This whole thread has convinced me to get a steamroller regardless of what my girlfriend says about to many bikes already!

  • I'm an aging bmxer who has decided to build up my first fixed/single speed bike firstly for transport and also to get some much needed exercise. I've been lurking on the forums for a while and this thread has pretty much made my mind up to get a steamroller.
I was after a quick bit of advice though, does anyone know whether there would be a fork/stem combination that would give the steamroller enough clearance for barspins? I want my bike primarily for actually riding rather than doing tricks but if my bmx background gets the better of me I may not be able to resist. Also I love the look of the charge scissor/fbm sword etc but would this kind of trick frame be practical enough for riding distances on for a prolonged period?

The Scissor or the Sword would be just as practical as the Steamroller for riding distances. May not be quite as comfortable as they are built a bit heavier but probably not enough to actually notice.

I used to run a Handsome Dog fork on the front with 700c*32 tyres. That was barspin-able.

  • I have no idea if these are good or not, but this might make the standard steamroller fork barspinnable

  • ^^ I would rather just get a different fork, with less rake.

  • couldnt you just get the crosscheck but built as a ss/fixie? i love mine, its freakin solid and rolls great and it has the optionality of fixed or geared builds

  • The people being convinced into buying Steamrollers by reading the shit we write, is the best part.

I've already owned 3 of them and it's got me thinking about one again!

They would sell more if they did them in more/better colours I think.

  • I love mine to bits, its the colour of bloody poo, it's dirty, it's dented, I don't care

    You are right though.

  • I love the bloody poo colour! I've had my eye on a steamroller for the last 6 months or so, I just keep getting tempted by the scissor/cutter/sword because they look like an oversized bmx, which is what I've always ridden! There's so much love for the steamroller on here that I'm pretty much convinced it would be the more sensible option. I just want something simple and strong that I can hack around on!

  • Trainwreck. If it helps I'm a 90s BMXer myself.

Admittedly I still own and occasionally even ride a BMX but the steamroller will serve you well.

How tall are you? If you're looking at a 53 you can come have a go on mine some time. I'll even swap it to risers for the day so you can throw some bars.

  • What fork did you use for polo? Handsome Dogs? I want to switch over but I can't find a fork that improves the front end over the Fuji.

  • Not pretty and the colours are worse, but you could also look at a Cotic Roadrat.*
