Cycling on ice... a guide

  • I managed to go sideways coming out of a junction this morning (my fault - came out of the saddle and gave it some beans before realising how slippy it was). Stayed upright but don't think I would have done on a freewheel.

  • Is it already time to post 'Glad in Lelystad' again?

  • I have brought entirely the wrong bike with me today. I nearly stacked it on the way in as well.

  • I didn't notice any difference on the road yesterday or today? Are you all cycling across the Serpentine or something?

  • stick to the main autoroutes
back roads will be much more icy

You're too fat for ice to affect you much.

  • You're too fast for ice to affect you much.

    Must be.

  • That too.

  • It was frosty but I didn't see any black ice.

I was in Morden, a solid -2º when I left this morning which had become +1º by the time I got into the middle of town.

  • So just to recap. Should we be leaning? Or is leaning out?

  • It's all about inverse leaning.

  • It was frosty but I didn't see any black ice.

It was hiding against a black background.

  • That could be the reason.

  • Rahahahahacist!

  • ...and now people, try not to lean.

  • I t was -2 in Finchley and I would say colder in Regents Park. Not blackice, but the crunchy frostystuff that will still get you if you are not careful

  • It's all about inverse leaning.

    With shim, or without?

  • Nolean TM

  • It was -4 in Leeds for my commute home last night.

I was tapping along nicely, about 18mph, and came off a roundabout onto a stretch of road, only to find a cracked water main was bubbling out of a grate, coating everything in a thick, clear shell of ice.

I stayed upright by screaming, "FUCK FUCK FUCK OH NO FUCKITTY FUCK NO NO NO SHIT SHIT!" until I had got past the hazardous area, and then I said, "OH FUCK OH THANK YOU GOD."

Try this little tip next time you hit a really icy patch. It worked for me.

  • But no leaning, right?

  • ^had the same when I turned off greenwich high road into a side street on my way home one evening last winter...

the roads had been clear for ages but I forgot that the side roads stay iced up for a week or so after the main roads.

went from zooming along without a care to being in the middle of a 50yd long sheet of ice covering the entire road. at which point I too basically let fly with the naughty words

luckily I had my studded tyres on the bike but it was the first time I'd tried them out in anger so was still bricking it that I was a goner. was clenching so much it took a minute to wrestle the saddle from between my arse cheeks when I finally got home. but

  • I assume you pumped the brakes? Always pump the brakes on ice.

  • i thought you were supposed to deflate the brakes when it was icy
