  • Looks like a lot of fun, I've been day dreaming about a go anywhere 125 to rock about on but no space or money.

  • That was my thinking but a 30mph collision with a pedestrian left me in hospital with a deep cut next to my knee that needed emergency surgery, a slice deep into a steel toe cap, crushed heel and twisted ankle despite having work safety boots on and that was on a scooter.

I can totally understand where you're coming from but sadly experience tells me it's got little to do with the weight of the engine.

  • True dat. Experience tells me similarly that it's not the coming off per se, but the violence of the collision and any sudden stops. Start worrying about it too much and all riding stops being enjoyable. My commute home on my pushbike has become temporarily less enjoyable at the moment after an unplanned hurdle over a ladies bonnet (phrasing?) the other week. It all kind of fades with the scars I suppose...

Spend too much time thinking about anything and you ruin the enjoyment of getting on with it.

To whit - my first weekend back in town for a while and I plan on spending Saturday morning getting sideways and jumping off stuff on narrow trails around the edge of cliffs while only partially in control of my rebuilt CR250. :)

Freshly run in, crazy compression. Only a worn rear tyre separates me from absolute mayhem.

Oh and I've got to change the sodding chain and sprockets still before I go.

    Et ramble-cetera....

  • having work safety boots

    Is that safe?

I was always told you should never wear steel toed work boots on a bike.

The logic being, the soles aren't stiff enough to prevent the hard steel cap from bending back and at best damaging the top of your foot / at worst cutting your toes off.

  • That what I was told. But letsthink about it which bike boots have covers for the toes? Proper EU speced steel toe cap boots should not deform with less that 15,000 newtons and 200 joules pointimpact that. What does that equate to being run over?

  • If your toes were bent back to the extent where that became a problem, you'd be pretty fucked in any case.

  • Isn't it compression not bending back?

I use daytonaevo boots, as I had a bad experience of a van trying to run over the back of my foot/heal and drove off. Lucky I had witnesses. Daytona supplied a replacement set of boots and the insurance also paid for another set. The movement is very limited as they are designed to ride in and not walk around.

  • If you didn't watch the Ian Hutchinson Doc. it's available online. And is well worth a watch.

  • That's a pro pos the protective gear and boots talk, right?
    Amazing comeback from that guy!

  • And he wins supersport. Awesome.

  • I wasn't wearing them because of the bike. I was obliged to wear them for the course I was taking and was too lazy to take a change of biking clothes for a 6 miles journey. Ultimately that decision cost me 3 months off work. In fairness if I'd had a desk job that would have been 6 weeks.

  • All the gear, all the time.

  • anybody else heard of this?

  • Yep, a friend of mine who rides told me this 15 years ago.

  • This is why I never drive near my house, and whenever I'm coming home from the pub I'm always sure to drive up the M1 to stay with my brother in Manchester. Safety -hic- firsht.

  • Sounds likely, you're generally setting off from your home so you'll be doing proportionally more miles around there.

  • And the superstock.

  • Yeah have seen that and read a few articles.

  • please excuse my naivety.
this afternoon for the first time i saw an amputee (right arm) motorcyclist on the old kent road.
it reminded me that we don't have to be held back by our misfortunes.
from searching on our favourite search engine, i understand now that its not an uncommon feat but regardless, well done sir you're an inspiration.

  • I've changed my oil and I'm having doubts over the oil level.

The dip stick indication level in my manual isn't all that helpful - or maybe I'm being thick.

  • Where do you think the high / low marks are?

  • Is it the same on both sides?

  • Between the lowermost two markings. Ignore the dot at the bottom, the next two after that.
