just checked the dipstick and now i feel like one!
the oil level is way over what it should be, way over that amount that you normally just shrug off and say "its okay, it'll burn that off on the next journey"
what damage can be done by excess oil? just so i know.
there is still alot less oomph and a definite clutch slip ting going on..
at the moment its not the same motorcycle that was bombing through france and weaving through belgium at 105 mph earning myself the name adonis.
thank you markyboy and vanuden for the checking tips
it has been drinking lots of oil recently. the mileage is 65,000congratulations jambon
Blimey, hope it's OK. Now's probably not the time, but I wanted to pick your brains about old BMWs... I'm still faffing and waiting having passed my test months ago...

So you've accidentally over filled it at some point? Putting too much oil in generally shouldn't be too bad, however with more in the same size space you'd expect the oil pressure to rise. At worst you could blow a seal (no nautical jokes) or a gasket. Either of which you'd probably notice as an oil leak. Can you put a pan under the sump and just loosen the plug and drain a bit off until the levels are back to what they should be? Try that and see if it makes any difference.
This could be why you're burning oil because some is getting through into the cylinder due to the rise in pressure. Is it a wet clutch? 65,000 isn't much for a BMW (Boxer as in horizontal twin?) so I'd be surprised if it was worn rings or valve guides. When you say it's been burning lots of oil recently can you elaborate?

I see you're still getting confused between mph and kph, Doris

Main bearing oil seal leaks oil on to clutch plate, spark plugs foul with carbon deposits, piston rings get gummed up, are the likely effects. And if you are only tootling around on those continental jaunts it won't help, you need to open the throttle some more to burn off those deposits (once you have changed the clutch plate)

So I'm not sure yet if I understand it all right. Coppi, is the BMW fine since you removed the oil? Have you had your mechanic to look into this?
Meanwhile, I finally installed my luggages on my bike. Have them since christmas. The frame is not designed for my bike, I had to make some brackets, which is why I never took the time properly before.
It looks a bit ugly when the panniers are not on, maybe I should paint the DYI bracket black, or use nicer bolts with allen key heads, I don't know. For sure I hate the indicators (had to remove the original ones), and I want to find something better (which is why I did not bother too much about the cables running rather untidyly for now) But the frames are solidely attached, these will be so useful!
(not shown here, but I do have a pannier for each sides...)

it gets used every other day at least , even if the journeys are only short. once a month a slightly longer journey.
when i mentioned the burning oil it was an assumption as i thought i had to top up with oil sooner than i thought i should have needed to.
i bought an old metal baking pan this morning so i can drain the oil. is there a gasket for the nut at the bottom or washer?
ill check the plugs for carbon deposits tomorrow.
thanks for all the advice everybody. it's greatly appreciated.
sparky i love bmw's , there's alot aesthetically you can do with them if you dont want the grandad look that i have gone for :-)
your missus definitely said "he's a right Adonis" not sure if she prefixed the sentence with "corr".
nice panniers vello, they look better than i thought they would.

There is washer for the nut you drain the oil from.
You can also get pumps to get the oil out (if nothing obstruct the hose getting inside the filling oil like on my bike), it's less messy, less work...L

thanks vello.
i am still looking for a way of transporting a motorcycle from wadebridge , cornwall to se london.
if anybody knows someone making that journey in a half filled van please let me know.

Yo Coppithat - pull out your airfilter and see if it's clogged with oil and shite. There's probably a crankcase breather pipe to the airbox and if it's overfilled, it will pump oil through it to the airbox.
Would explain why it smokes and won't run well over 3.5k too.

If you havent done this yet - maybe try a siphon:

Just suck out the excess from the top...

Just find the lowest point of the engine and there will be a threaded bolt (sump plug.) Unscrew it carefully and drain a bit out into a pan (or similar.)
No gasket or O rings normally, just be careful not to torque it up too tight when you pop it back in.
Do check your airbox - bikes have had crankcase breathers that vent there forever. If they fill up with oil, they really don't work very well.

Why is my XTZ750 so bastard difficult to get luggage for? I've been trying to find suitable kit now for-bloody-ever. Needs to be for 2 up.
Tank bags are kind of out because of the very high oddly shaped tank. Panniers would be ideal but nobody seems to make racks for the XTZ anymore because it's so old. Have been lurking on the bay but nothing. The problem with normal racks is they won't fit because the exhaust is so high at the back. There is a company in Romania that makes proper big ally panniers and racks but this is meant to be a budget tourer not a broken bank tourer!

How about getting a pair or racks and modifying them to fit?

mikey5000 thanks, i used the sump bolt in the end. embarrasingly there was almost a litre and a half too much in there.
i'll check the air filter later this morning and sonic clean the carburettors.
nice pictures crispin, is that mrs glover looking very tolerant in the corner and reflection
i broke the ''all the gear, all the time'' rule the other day and rode to the shops in a short sleeved shirt and a corker helmet. i felt as though i was setting a bad example (not intentional).

Gerald, who's the black guy with the chopper, who's bike sounds like a super loud Harley (is it?), and the widest rear motorcycle tyre I've ever seen? I think he's a dread. I've seen him a few times in Sarf, brapping his bike around Elephant and New Cross.

I was hawking and got outbid at the very last second!
So much excess oil could well be the root of your problems, take it for a spin after you've checked and cleaned air-filter (as others have suggested). Let us know how you get on but I'm betting that (fingers crossed) oil will be well!
(Sorry.)

Gerald, this excess oil, have you topped it up by that much recently? Do your carbs weep fuel? Do you turn your fuel taps off when you've parked? I have seen, only once, a crankcase filled with petrol from a 'leaky' carb dribbling fuel through the inlet and running down the bore. If there is any chance of that It would be worth an oil and filter change.

GA2G his name is tundi (i think its spelt like that) he's a property developer or antiques dealer. he has had it for a few years , i only ever see him on it in the summer. lives in greenwich.
36x18 the carbs dont weep fuel. occasionally the float pin sticks but apparently this is a typical for them. if the bowl floods turning off the fuel tap and allowing it to empty clears the problem while your on the move.
when parking up i turn off the taps when i remember, which is most times.
going to check the air filter now.

^ Thanks fella, managed to pick these up. Cheaper than the Romanian ally panniers but look solid:
Their pannier racks should also fit, it'll take a bit of fitting and drilling but not loads of cutting and welding!
