  • Ricardos proved you could build a 2 stroke that met clean air regulations of CO and oil dispersal. Two strokes do pass ULEZ emissions!

  • Thought I had replied to this.

Yes I know that feeling and checking every one again so the feel the same. Found the tappet tool to hold the bolt makes things so much easier.

Oh and if someone wants you to do a VFR Vtec valve clearance with out the special tools. Forget it, and that is why many don't get checked. Also have to strip down half the bike.

  • Tappet tool is another one on my list of nice to have.

  • Ugh…bucket and shim…so. Fucking. Long. Never realised how sharp the cams are till your hands are in there.

  • Okay the mechanics have come up short with a solution for my reg/rec.

How can I reduce my losses on a gamble, when fitting a mosfet (plus bypass) that’s not strictly listed for my bike?

  • Any good Mosfet reg/rec will do. They all work exactly the same way (just different components.) The one sold most commonly here is from Shindengen. Just check your stator and get wiring. You can wire direct from the ac stator to the rectifier/regulator > 30a fuse > battery and skip the factory wiring altogether. (save the short bit from the stator)
Means you can move it somewhere with better airflow too if needed.

I've put two different sorts on the XR and Duc and they both work fine.

  • Oh and make sure you've got the correct input wiring as they're usually potted. If you've got a 3 phase stator (3 wires coming from the engine, usually yellow) you'll need a 3 phase reg/rec. You can use a three phase reg/ rec on single phase stators, just tape up the extra wire. You can do VV, but you'll have less output.

  • Just trying to find the right mosfet really. Apparently a lot of the Shindengen on ebay are China fakes.

  • Haha - buy two of the cheapest and keep the spare under the seat!

  • My mechanics is very conservative. They’re unhappy to fit (or sell) anything that has not been guaranteed by a manufacturer.

They called the distributor, who then apparently called RM Stator in Canada, who refused to guarantee any of their ‘universal’ kits will work on the F3.

It flies squarely in contrast to forums of people fitting any old r/r from a GSXR etc.

I have the fear. I don’t want to pay twice and I don’t trust the bike now I have had a week of agonising over three phase options.

  • This was Plan B!!

Find a mosfet reg/rec on ebay. Or try eletrex but they seem to have been dodgy on waranty in the past.

  • I followed similar guidance from the mechanic. Negligible (and similar) resistance across stator connections, 0L where expected, and bike turned on and ran on battery alone.

Ughhhh. Yea. I guess I should just buy a Mosfet and just say ‘fuck it’.

At £130 for the RM Stator from Moto Electrical it’s not a hard ‘fuck it’, more like an ‘ohhhhhhhhh……’ with my eyes closed.

  • I'd just order one off ebay mate - there's loads for 40 quid or so. Wire it up with a fuse before the battery. It will work and you can't hurt anything. Then if you're a bit worried about longevity, keep a spare.

I know people are down on the Chinese stuff but it's really not a complicated component.

  • That’s what I was thinking, apart from the mechanics putting the fear in me. Just don’t wanna get stranded anywhere with a dead battery, or dead bike.

I’ll have a think over the weekend.

  • One of the Adventure Spec/Trail and Adventure Motorcycle Podcast lads sent me these stickers. Made me laugh.

  • At least order the right one and some are mosfet and some aren't. Linked previously how to identify the difference.

@pdlouche You can get an LED set up that show charging condition so you can see if the bike is charging (+13.5v) or not (+12.5v)

  • Yea I need to fit one of those little V-readout things.

  • Took it for a 55 mile loop / test ride and it rode great!! it hits 80 mph with room to spare but in all honest that scares me and I would rather live.

Really pleased with all the work we have done too get this running. It seems to pull fine now, must of needed some time to bed in? maybe.

Who knows how long it will take to explode on me and brake down!! either way I am gonna enjoy it till it does!

  • How old are the tyres, brake fluid and fork oil?

  • Top work!

  • @jambon Would it be possible to get info on who's refurbing your wheels? Reckon I might skip this summer with the SV, refurbish it, and sell the CBR-RR for parts.

  • Cbr-rr for parts you say…

  • This is who I'm trying to get to refurb my wheels, visited them on Friday lunchtime with wheels in hand and no one was around. Will give them one more chance before going to another local company. Can let you know how it pans out.

  • Appreciate it.

@pdlouche it’s a straight out track bike I used for a couple years. Needs a fair bit of money dumped into it.
