im not wangling for business coz the price is steep, but as this thread seems to be able to appreciate beautiful textiles,
and this is what my mum makes, and shes managed to get them into the v&a shop

Having an epic fail on the tension front. Velcro took an hour and looks shit and now I can't get through the edging with thin courdora and liner as the thread keeps coming out. Have tried all tension settings and can't think what else it could be. About to give up on the sewing hobby.

does the thread come out of the top of the stitched fabric or the bottom?

does the thread come out of the top of the stitched fabric or the bottom?
why what does that mean?
want to learn more!

• #111
Comes out of the needle which is why I thought it was the wrong tension setting, but none of them work. All the fabrics arent that thick so shouldn't be a problem for the machine. Very frustrating!

Just to get the obvious out of the way first, i assume you're holding both cottons tight by hand until the first few stitches are in place yes?
Oh. Opps.
Was never taught this, but then I only had two lessons. Is this because it's tougher fabric as I didn't need to do this with calico? I usually just backstitch after a few and it's fine.btw the cotton is coming out the needle after about 10cm's.
Cheers mate.

Hmm, interesting.
I've had the bobbin out many a time as it gets jammed up a lot.
Trouble is it happens quite a few stitches in so might be tricky to see when it goes wrong. It's fine with thin material however, which is why I thought it might be a tension issue.

Cheers mate.
Not my machine so won't be taking it to a mechanic.
I suspect because it's fine on thinner material I'm pushing it beyond it's means. I figured because people have done bags on here with domestic machines and with thicker cordura that it would be fine.
I'll try it on mine in a few weeks when I can find a pedal to fit (the Crown Point Sanwa from Smeear)! -

It could also be down to the type of needle being used as certain materials need an oval shaped needle instead of a rounded one.

Ha, that's weird ^, have we met? Damn my cover being blown. ;) EDIT: Ha, it's fine, I just wondered how you knew. No worries!
Cool, won't buy other needles just yet then.
I'm keen to get on my own machine and see how that rocks. If it was good enough for Smeear...Now, anyone got any foot pedals lying round they don't want?
Ahem. -

I've always wanted to be good at sewing. So how were those Crafty Bitches?
I work with Neil who went also. He loved it.I'd really like to do part 2 as I think 2 lessons wasn't enough.
Question. Anyone know where I can get some foam for padding?

I'll be back on the cape case in a couple of days ... had to take time out to go diving in the Philippines for a couple of weeks ;-) I have about 7 whole days set aside to see whether I can finish the cape, and make waistcoat and knickerbockers or some sort of legwear...
Here's the cape in progress - still got epaulettes / buttons / button holes and lining to tidy up. You can just get a glimpse of the colour of the lining in the pic with the unfinished hem hanging too low. Nice and bright. Buttons will be silver skull and crossbones designs :-). First time I've ever done a 'rolled collar' ... seems to have worked! The arm holes are not designed for bike riding though, I might have to make some adjustments there later to give some better arm movement. I tell you though, this cape is definitely going to get more outings than just the tweed run ... 50 fixed women as well at the least!!
