Geography fail. Nottingham is Midlands. We have to draw the line somewhere...

  • View point fail. Nottingham is far north of where we are and is therefore north as far as we are concerned.

  • I think I might have read some Sillitoe at university but have no clear memory of the books. I suspect they will feel dated now but if you read one let me know.
I'm going to maintain my bid to widen this thread to include non fiction. And even books you don't read but look at; never seen a copy of Robert Frank's The Americans? Or Tim Pages' Nam or Susan Meiselas' Nicaragua or Don McCullin's Hearts Of Darkness or James Nachtwey's Inferno? Or anything by Weegee? Just as deserving of attention as anything mentioned so far and just as much a vital part of any auto-didact's reading list.

    You dropped this - .

    view-point.

    Tsk...

  • nice thanks will check out in due course-have to be selective after a while given there is only so much time. As well as lepidoptery and yoga books am into non fiction largely in the form of naturalism, picked up Dartmoor by Mercer and The Worm Forgives the Plough by John Stewart Collis today, should be perfect for the time over new year whilst in retreat deep in the countryside at Devils Punchbowl.

  • just found a short story called "The Bike" from a Sillitoe selection by Longman Imprint- going to read it now. Everyone has heard of "Saturday Night......"feat. Arthur Seaton and his hard drinking fixie skidding ways, however theres loads of novels out there.

  • Yup, seconded, it's great. I'm teaching him next term actually.

Blimey, is he already a published author while still being a student? ;)

  • Hardy har :-)

  • Vernacular, obvious logic gag, emoticon.

    Polite tolerance, sympatheticon.

    This forum is repetitive.

You're just teasing us because our language doesn't have a proper case structure like yours.

No worries, we'll just have to change it back. :)

EDIT: die/dye joke not funny and duly retracted.

  • One or other of us takes Tynan to the library fortnightly - stock up on 7 new titles, and enjoy the storytelling/singing session.

Are you not worried that all that learning might turn him into a mental ?

  • James Joyce- Ulysses, never read it. ...you?

Still haven't read it, last book I did read quotes it repeatedly,
This must be the time to start it, rain, holidays coming, must be time

  • I am currently using the ripped off front cover of Ulysses as a book mark whilst reading Bill Drummonds new one.

  • Just downloaded the complete works of Joyce onto my Kindle. No need to read them now.

    Sacrilege!

Ulysses is the best book I've ever read.

Never managed to get more than 20 pages into Finnegan's Wake though. I have it unabridged as an audio book though and figure this may help with getting to grips with the cadence of the prose.

  • I'm in training to read Ulysses.

One question though - would you say that you'd need a decent knowledge of Homer's Odyssey to understand it properly, or should I just wade in? Last time I tried to read it, about 18 years ago, I failed pathetically.
