  • nice! bsa bb? gonna put gears on it?

  • threaded bb. yeah will be moving over my 10sp zee/slx setup. works fine for now. maybe upgrade in the new year

  • this page is so full of win

  • In terms of reach, what's the go-go starting point for 29er trail bikes?

I am assuming choose frame reach, stem length and bar sweep such that the hand position on flat bars or risers is.the same distance from the bb as the 'tops' on road or cx bikes.

    Yay/nay?

Sort of... It's not a bad place to start.

The reach to the bars on my Talbot & Ogre is only a tiny bit longer than on my Straggler, but then I use fairly wide bars ( anything from 710-780mm ). If i was using a 660-680mm, then it'd be pretty close to mtb bars around the same as drop bar hoods.

I've found that 25-30mm extra on the bars has required 10-15mm less on the stem.

Keep in mind that recent geometry is designed to work best with a fairly short stem wide'ish bar combo and allow yourself some room to manoeuvre either way.

  • Cheers. With compact drops and a 380 reach on my roadbike, I run a 100 stem. On my tourer it's 390 reach, 90 stem and the same bars. Similar on my cross bike.

So the thinking is, on a 29er: 420 reach, 60 stem. Maybe a 70 or 80 stem if I want a big bar sweep. Sounds like it should work right?

The concern was if I would want / need a stem shorter than any on the market... But I'm guessing that won't happen given the numbers above.

  • In the right sort of area there, yeah. I'd leave the sub-50mm stems for the slack angled, longer travel fork type of bike.

  • Aye, wouldn't want to go less than 50. But not thinking I will have to...

If I size down the frame I would get 20 less reach, meaning a starting point of an 80 stem, possibly going to 90 or 100 with swept bars.

  • Depends on what you're getting :-)

  • Nice Inbred!
I'd suggest putting the DHR in front and getting something less chunky and better rolling for the rear such as an Ardent. My 2 cents....:)

  • anyone after a large on-one scandal, F29 forks, CK headset, thomson stem - £220 ono

    proper pictures soon

  • for where I go cycling in this period, I feel good with these two tires, later will change the back with a high roller.

  • Not....bad...

  • My 29er, a 2012 Salsa Mamasita with MKM (On-One) carbon fork, 2x10 Deore/SLX/XT, BB7's etc. A fun fast bike for light xc riding & winter commuting.

  • Very nice. Does need new fork stickers to match though!!

  • Indeed, not sure what to go for as the blue travel adjuster and the valve cap might look a bit horrid next to lime green fork decals. maybe some glossy black ones.. idk

  • Glossy b would look fire I think...

  • I wondered if anybody has a 29er rim they want to sell?
