That must look ridiculous with 26"
26" what?
-
• #4178
I don't remember you even building that up :-/
Nah don't worry I didn't, handed over the little bits I had left to Apollo today.
26" what?
Tires

who's talking about 26er tires?

You could stick a 2.35" Hans Dampf in there no probs. Nice 2.1" racing Ralph on the rear.
Bam.

Nobody, was just making an observation after you said they were for 26" but fitted 29.

I bin Indra'd, I think. you've got me all confused.
I was saying that spotter could get the on one fork instead of charge scissor. it will take biggerer wheels and accomodate a modern brake.
on one 26er fork will take 29er wheels. no one needs to know it was ever labeled as a 26er.
edit: ah. the forks look silly with the wheels they're designed for. yeah maybe. my stock 29er kona fork looked a bit strange even with a 29er wheel in.
sorry for the confusion. -

Plus your average 'suspension corrected' 29er fork would raise the front end of that silver bike quite a lot.
Fixed if you want. But I struggle to believe you can really push it without a front brake.
Maybe Im getting old.

I'm not really an off road riders, riding fixed I think I pushed myself further than I would have* if I was freewheeling, I just don't feel as confident.
*Until I got used to it.

Does anybody happen to know if it's possible to order a BB17 Serpent Frame from a European distributor? I know I can order from the US but I'd rather not have to pay the import costs.
Thanks

I want to get rad. And I want a 29er. Well actually I want a Surly Krampus as the 29+ platform sounds super appealing. Does anyone on here have a Krampus?
I've only read good things elsewhere, they're just a bit pricey and I am trying to work out if it's worth it over a 'standard' 29er...
-
• #4188
There is a bike shop in Richmond station that has a Krampus you can take for a test ride.
I can't wait to read about you getting mad rad sick or whatever urban vernacular white middle class youths have appropriated this week.
(Assuming sick does not involve casualty visits like Indra)

It amuses me that you gave me a genuinely helpful reply and then ninja edited to take a slight dig. To be fair I am just copying John Prolly's lingo - consumption of the media and all that shit.
Thanks James, I've emailed them.

Ashleigh in that shop is a nice guy, v helpful and enthusiastic.
I was out at swinley on the fatbike and saw someone on a bling bling Krampus, XTR, Chris King etc. The lightweight group set seemed a little like overkill on a steel Mtb frame.
Am not entirely convinced by 29+ as I don't think it is meant to giver the same flotation as a fat 26er but this is gleaned internets wizdumb.
-
• #4191
Yeah, when I first looked at them, I wanted to build it up myself but it'll end up costing a lot more than the complete Krampus and there is no point in having really expensive parts - the complete one all ready has solid components.
That's the only thing I've read people say that could be considered as a negative, floatation just isn't the same as on a proper fat bike. The only other thing I'd considered was a Salsa Mukluk, though I realise they're quite different. Not sure about the alu frame though as I think I'd rather have steel, but I think Charlie the Bike Monger is the only place where I'd be able to test ride one and Swanage is a bit far away!
Anyway, no point in contemplating what I want without riding a Krampus first.

• #4192
Ask nicely and you could have a ride on my partner's mukluk.

Kind of agree here.
You could always build up a Karate monkey and fit a fat(ish) 2.5" tyre up front with frame clearance for a 2.3" rear.
Might be easier*to sell on, if you don't enjoy off-roading?
*not entirely a dig

If you want a trail bike the on one fattie is really well rated by people on mtbr and ukfatbikes, and is really reasonably priced.
At the moment my lynskey 29er is getting no use, the fat bike is so much fun.
The rider is much more important than the bike. Buy something, ride it into the ground and then think about what you do and don't like. Over analising the purchase of a first bike is fairly pointless. The on one is a good place to start and you may just decide to upgrade bits.

You can fat-front a Karate Monkey with the stock fork, I've spec'd the rims on my Ogre wide enough to fit a 29x3" Knard once Christmas is out of the way. Now I just need my bloody Cyclescheme voucher to come through...

This too. Using a Salsa Gordo, or Velocity P35 rim would allow a knard to fit.

You hipsters and your fickle bike purchases.

Naaaaa, just not the same as having massive tyres. 2.5's look positively skinny in comparison to Knard's. Otherwise I'd just get a front sus 29er.

This is a good suggestion. Has 1 x 10 as well which is what I want, ideally. Was happy with the build quality of the Pompino frame so I'm sure this'll be the same. Yeah, actually, it's almost half the price of a Krampus!

• #4198
Fat front does not give the rear flotation which is where most of your weight is but it will give great front wheel traction.
-
• #4199
JB most people upgrade the inner tubes and the brakes. Then various bits of the finishing kit for personal comfort.
There are threads on both the previously mentioned websites discussing upgrading the fattie.
Also the term is hardtail not front sus.

Hmm, fair enough.
Does sound a bit like "I really need a 150mm trail bike to ride around Swinley/Epping/Thetford forest" though.
I don't remember you even building that up :-/
