What range do you need?
You can get 11-36 cassette in 10spd.
You only need 1 shifter+cable+mech+cassette. With 1x you only need a short cage mech. So your shifting is a touch better, and chain slap is reduced.

chain slap is reduced.
Particularly with one of the newer clutch style mechs.
Or so I'm led to believe.

^this, I'm running 2x10 (11-36) on 2 bikes and I think I can count on one hand the amount of times the chain has seen the granny. The only issue I have on the Swift (1x10, 11-36) is I run out of gears at the top end, but being a hardtail it's a pretty good indication that I'm going quick enough.

Might be overkill running a Type 2/Shadow Plus on a short cage, I notice no chain slap at all on my setup.
Also, XX1 can be run on a 10 speed and that negates the need of a chain device.

Theres a few small machinists doing the long toothed 1x rings now. So you dont need the expensive XX1 ring.

Wolftooth stuff looks good.
MRP Bling Ring as well so you can ditch the spider as well, if you can find XX1/X0 crank arms only.

Wolftooth was the one I was thinking about.
I've 'modified*' a raceface crank for use with a 31 tooth SS chainring. To run 31 : 11-36, on the fatbike. If I want something smaller for snoww riding, I'll look into a clever Wolftooth set-up.
(*dremeled the bugger out of)

you can always run a double chainring but skip the FD completely. I've done this with a triple and just replaced the outer ring with a bashguard. It's not hard to shift between rings manually. I've even read tales of touring cyclists that used to do this on the move by using a spare spoke.
Done this way you can mix and match whatever combo suits rather than something that needs to match FD capacity/shape.

What's up gang. I'm thinking about getting a Vitus Dee 29 off Chain Reaction. Can any one tell me what type of rear hub it has and if it's possible to run two rear sprockets with a little spacer in between?
This is the closest picture I could find:

I'm planning on getting the V-brake version at some point, keep it cheap n simple

Just seen this. You may already know now, but I'm pretty sure the V1 uses a standard freewheel, rather than a mini-cassette style cog carrier. This, as far as I know limits you to a single cog. The mini-cassette style incorporate spacers to adjust chainline and these allow you to fit an extra cog in place of some spacers.

You can still have a lot of fun ( even off road ) with a very simple bike.

Exactly, plus i could make it fixed gear and flip the wheel over without much faffing

Lovely frame. Doesnt really need saying.
But you did a really nice job of building that up. Form and function, nailed.

Ended up getting one of those Wolftooth chainrings and running 1x10 (X9 mech), working nicely for the very brief jaunts I've had thus far.

Anyone have a frame with rack mounts on that they want to sell?
2010 build just died
No EBB, standard 68-72.
iI'd jumped to the conclusion that a full groupset'd be way more than sorting out nice SS bits, whereas there's this full XT set w/Elixir 9s for 1p under £500...
