  • cheers SF..
i am also contemplating going 1x10 for the gears, 36t on the front / 11-32 cassette save some weight.. i'll let you know what the final spec is.
    Al

My CDF was 1x8 36 up front to 11-32 at the back and was fine, I didnt mind the big jump between gears either. Gonna use the same when I get the Haro built up.

  • The current state of my budget stand-in until I get my custom Rob English in a couple of months. :]

  • This is the bike that endurance Legend Jay Petervary has just used to once again break the record for the tour divide.
After only setting a new record last year, it got broken in this years tour divide...so Jay went straight out and broke it again. 2711 miles, off road in 15 days, 16 hours, 14 minutes...AMAZING!

  • ^^ Someone else that likes to collect tyres :-)

The English sounds interesting. Will it be used for long distance tour divide type events?

  • ^^ & that just blows my mind!

Ha...I don't collect them...they're waiting to be thrown out...it's the back of my folks bike shop. :]

The English is gonna be my everything mtb. twenty niner, belt drive, hub gear, folding frame, fat front compatible, 135 front and rear so the wheels can be swapped in case of a rear hub failure, custom stem, aero bars, and forks, custom bags, etc. :]

If I can find a lot of money very quickly anyway. :]

  • Ha...I don't collect them.

    Yeah.. me neither :-s Although I now have spare 26" tyres & ride a 29er :-(

That bike sounds awesome! Very much look forward to seeing it. Did you work out the geometry from scratch, or base it on your current bike?

    • If you've detailed all this before, just point me in the right direction.
  • To be honest, xc MTB geo has barely changed over the years, maybe dropped about a degree each end. I'm pretty settled on about 70/72 for big wheels. I know my top tubes and seat tubes so I'm pretty sorted really. Just need to settle on how short I want to go with my chainstays. Probably not too short as the bike will be fully rigid, and often carrying a load.

I'm really excited to start talking it all through with Rob. My slot comes up late november after a year long wait, and i still don't have the money! :[

  • I may go for a custom one day, based on the geo of my ogre. That's got a 72 HA & 73 SA. The chainstays are meant to be 431mm, which is fairly short ( not measured them myself ) Not tried it loaded yet, so that could make a huge difference.

I was going to suggest that sliding dropouts could adjust your wheelbase, but as smallfurry pointed out to me previously, belt drive wont allow that option.

  • I want vertical dropouts and an EBB, so that I can drop the wheel straight in and out without affecting belt tension or brake position...plus I hate sliding dropouts personally. :]

Split dropouts don't come much neater than Robs imo. :]

  • ^ Very tidy. There's definitely two distinct camps where sliders/EBB are concerned. I've not had a problem with either.

I'm quite fond of my mad looking dropouts now, but can appreciate the clean look of an EBB.

Chainstay length, I reckon anywhere between 430mm - 450mm would be ok.

  • Haro Mary finally turned up today, I have started a new project thread but thought I should put it here too-

still need a few bits to finish it off- 31.6 seatpost, longer gear cable(?!), decent BB and something to sort out the rear brake.

  • Hi Any one out there riding a RIP 9/

    Cheers

    Steve

  • more fettling and a cardboard shim on the seat post-

  • What's a mint 2nd hand Mary frame/forks worth these days? Got one I'm thinking of splitting.

  • I got mine from Snoops for £150 posted with the Salsa forks, just got back from a ride along the coast path and cant rate it enough although only had the CDF to compare and it pisses all over that even with stupid skinny tyres on.

  • and here are some pics from the maiden voyage-

    Size?

  • 21". Also had Hope M4 brakes with 205/160mm rotors, KCNC stem, flat bar, Thomson post, Spech Romin and some Wellgo SPDs.

  • can anyone recommend some decent budget rims?

  • Not a lot of choice in budget 29er rims compare to their 26" counterparts.

    There's these.

Never had a problem with mavic rims.

These are cheaper, but I've no experience of wtb rims.

  • those mavics are quite cheap really- good find BN, you really are a mine of 29er information!

  • ^ They should let you fit some fatter tyres on the Mary. Be even more fun to ride then!

I have a nice 11-36 10 speed cassette. On paper the gaps between gears looked fine to me. Not something I'd like on the road, but fine off.

superstarcomponents do cheap, light, and ressumbly solid chain keepers.

  • Ah, Smallfurry's back. I can stop dispensing shoddy, ill informed mtb advice now.
