You can maybe have a 'Half decade appreciation' badge?
-
• #1104
Does that get you into stuff for free, like a Blue Peter badge?

mmmm Sophie Ellis Bextor.

You'll need more than a badge to get into SEB.

Can't wait to join you for some mucky fun.Nice, The forumonger below is looking at the same bike. So a little review would be useful.
I still prefer the spec of the Haro, but am a bit anti shimano for no logical reason.
my insurance money has come through so I am looking to buy a bike real soon, I cant seem to find a race or club to chat to or try bikes so I am after some input from yourselves.
I have narrowed it down to either the On One Inbred 29er race or the Haro Mary XC, both geared, both steel, haro has sus forks inbred rigid carbon forks- also Haro £200 cheaper!
any input gratefully received. -

Sure, hopefully it'll arrive by the weekend so I can give it a good thrashing and report back. I put a lot of thought into which bike to go for. Given the type of riding I want to do, I don't think there's much to beat the Mary XC, particularly at the sale price of 550 squids.

Okay, currently massively conflicted: the Mary has arrived, but seriously unsure whether the 16" (585mm effective top tube) is big enough. I'm 5' 9" dead on, 32" inseam, longish arms... Should i have gone for the 18"??

sounds about right
I'm on 24".somthing ETT and a smigen under 6'2" and not sure if my new frame is too big! Giving it some more time though before I decide.
MTB frame should look low with plenty of stand over

Sounds like you're inbetween sizes, i'm 5"10 and the 18" frame is just small enough for me. I was considering switching it for a 16" but then my seatpost wouldn't be long enough so I stuck with it. Sounds like the 16" is your best bet.

Hmmm, this is my problem. I am at max seatpost length and my legs aren't at full stretch. I realise for offroad I will probably want it a bit lower than road cycling height, but I'm worried.
Sorry, I hate doing the newbie stress! I did try to find a shop in London to try before I bought... Maybe I should swallow it and go for the size up.

Get yourself a longer seatpost?
In my case they only make the seatpost I have to a certain length and it isn't long enough for the 16 inch.

Oh my god, I need these now! 370g UST 29er rims 32h with no weight limit!
Now if On-One hurry up and get their new long travel titanium 29er frame out on the market I can get myself a very expensive Christmas present. -

I think the price floating around when they where first announced was £500-600 complete wheel set, with 120 engagement point hubs, own brand though. Will wait and see what the hubs are like, I'm leaning towards Hope hubs in blue to colour match the rest of the bike....

Say I get a 410mm layback post (as I also feel like the cockpit is quite short, but this may be because I'm used to a road bike and have no MTB experience) - is this going to radically change the bike's handling compared with gaining the extra length in top tube?

Probably not.
You dont want to be too far over your rear wheel, because it can cause problems when climbing. A bit of a set-back on a seatpost should'nt do this though.
Also you do want your bars closer (more under your shoulders) on a mountainbike. As you want to be able to lift/plant the front wheel over obstacles. A higher saddle position will push your shoulders forward slightly. So your new set back + longer saddle should have a lesser effect than you think.

^ This.
On the other hand i'm considering getting a shorter stem for my Mary to bring the bars closer, at the minute it's 100mm, what do you guys think the shortest stem I could go for would be? I'm not all that worried about the steering becoming a little more twitchy as it's quite relaxed at the minute, maybe a little too much. Anyway, thoughts?
Considering they've been available commercially for 12 years i doubt it. ;]
If you count Bruce Gordon's 'Rock n road' bikes it's about 2Oyrs. ;]
