True, there can be only one. Fortunately the other was short lived.

  • .

  • There can only be one Panzerwagen

Bit of a heroin chic look there.

  • Getting ready for winter, still needs a rear light and maybe the rear brake re-fitting at some point.

    Needs bar end plugs

  • .

  • @andytk - what mudguards are those? I'm still in two minds about getting some for the roller.

  • .

  • I'm seriously thinking about getting a 'Roller to then customise as a beater/winter bike (add braze-ons for guards and brakes, repaint etc).

I was checking out sizing and annoyingly the effective TT lengths are right in the middle for me as the 49cm is 1cm too small and the size up is 1cm to big. Anyone ride the dinky one and have comments? My feeling is that as I'll be riding with Cinelli Valencia bars the large size would be better.

Also, what size tyres can you get in there with guards on?

  • Marks & Sparks, my best fit is a 51-52cm bike and ride a 53cm 'Roller. I have my saddle 1cm further forward than I would on a bike with a smaller TT. You could get a shorter stem, too.

I used P-clips for my mudguards and they stay put. No need for braze ons.

    It is odd the way Surly skip a size. 49, 53 , 55, 57.

    Skydancer has a 49, I believe.

  • Just got back from taking the surly out for a gentle 15 mile route along the CS3 highway from Tower Hill to Barking and back again. Beautiful bike to ride. I'm also getting use to riding fixed gear.

  • FU..!! have a dent on my frame now...

Smashed into a car the other day. Head bruised (outwards)(was shaky the following day, but fine now), and a bruise (inwards) on the top tube. Unfortunately it was also my fault. Whatever... lack of concentration after a very long day with an aching head waiting to burst explains it all.,
Luckily, the frame is fine, not bent, just the dent. The buckled front wheel was sorted in minutes..

So far, I've managed to get some deal of the dent out again with treating the spot with subzero temps.
The edges of the dents show out of the frame at their corners. I'm not really sure how to deal that yet. Maybe I should just bring it on to someone who understands his trade of these damages..

Anyway, just to say: If you run your machine with drops; consider to mount a top tube protector to it. It'll save you a lot of hassle and an ugly spot...

Wicked, thanks for that. I think you're right, shorter stem and some tinkering with position might be in order. Although I am intereted in proper braze-ons, rattling guards and brake cable guides are behind me now!!

TBF, it may be worth considering a crosscheck.

It already has all the relevant braze ons and you've got the option of switching to gears or whatever in the future.

I've had a steamroller and own a crosscheck and absolutely love it.

  • :-( Winter makes me wish I got a crosscheck too. But I still love my roller.

  • Why have a steamroller if you don't roll it through the winter?
    Fat tyres fit fine
    Bring on the snow!

  • +1 Crosscheck for braze ons

CC comes in a 50cm or 52cm BTW, so you'll get closer to your ideal size

This. Main reason I own a roller is tyre clearance for winter!

same. We had 6 months of snow last winter so it gets ridden a lot. It is (?) the only fixed gear frame with horizontal toptube with up to 38mm tire clearance, thats why I bought it.

25's all the way through the last 2 winters.

clip on mudguard for the rear.

    done.

little sketchy on the ice but hey ho.

  • I've managed with 25's for the last 2 winters. This year I'm even going to invest in a mud guard.

  • had 25's for a few weeks last winter before I got my roller, was no fun!

  • Is 38mm the max clearance in total or with brakes?

has anyone gotten anything bigger on their 'roller before?

  • negaatio your a nutter!

  • i've run 35mm ritchey crossmax when off-roading.

they will fit with brakes, brakes are deep drop so loads of room.

there might have been 3mm more clearance but they were pretty tight.

you also might have to buy a new chain as the wheel will need to sit in a different spot in the track ends.
