It's been so excruciating having mine sitting by my bed waiting for my crankset!
-
• #304
Tarnished? it's a Surly mate,not a Colnago!

I know, it's just that first dent/scratch: so hard to get over. I'll be fine now. I can now stop stressing about when it's going to lose it's original perfection

The gardens the wifes domain I only lift the heavy objects and cut the grass
BTW the whole project started with some wheels I picked up dead cheap at the LBS..... tandem wheels 48 spokes a piece......I figured with wheels that strong the frame had better compliment it
Wildgoose do you want my Surly to come and kick that 'mountain bikes' butt? -
• #307
ha!

Hi, yes, it's my first post.
I'm planning on building up with a new Steamroller frameset. What wheels should I put on it? It's going to be a road bike, mostly for commuting, partly for knocking around town. There's some rough road (but not off-road) on my route to work, so I want something which can take a few knocks, something a bit fatter. Any advice?

formula hubs, mavic open sport rims. Open pro's if you can afford it
or deep v rims, such as Velocitys or Weinmann DP18's, if you want them a bit stronger
People on here will build them for you. Also, there's loads of discussions about wheels, search and you shall find

I would suggest 36 hole Royce Track Hubs laced to DT Swiss RR1.2 rims or you could tell us how much you have to spend.

yes true.
mine = cheapo
jeygee = oooh

i massively doubt that velocity deep v's are stronger than open pros. there pinned rather than welded and don't have eyelets.
-
• #313
It's all about the wheelbuild than the rims.
a well build one can last you for ages.
if strength is really a concern, touring rims FTW.

I'll be useful unlike these arseholes.
LeVeL hubs on Mavic TN719 29er rims.
Now that is bombproof, unlike the hipster shit suggested above.note, these people are not arseholes.

blam, thanks for fielding that ed.
Also, you could try a Halo 29er rim, I think one has braking surface.... -
• #318

I'm trying to track down a set of CXP33's (at a reasonable price) - to upgrade the Surly stock wheels. Those wheels have taken one hell of a battering - and even gone through the window of an Audi - but they need to be retired...
Any offers would be greatly appreciated. -

Rigida Spunik rims, £18 from Spa Cycles, boomproof, end off
-
• #321
Cheers, the Open Pros look pretty sweet to me.

I recently built Clefty a wheel on some DT Swiss touring rims.
It's the only wheel I have ever got to tension and true in ten minutes. They are awesome (it's her front rim for her cross-check) -

That's because charge buckets are gash.
