Surly Steamroller owners...

  • Hi, another new Steamroller owner here!

Question about mudguards: I was quite happy with the Crud Roadracer I had in my Fillmore (stolen), so I was wondering if anyone has tried them on the Steamroller with 32 tyres?

I know the maximum tyre size recommended for the Cruds is 25, but it seems that there's some tolerance...

    Thanks!

  • Get some proper mudguard and p-clip instead, the roadracer were designed for road racing bicycle, whether the Surly aren't.

Why they never have mudguard mount in the first place is odd, probably trying to seperated it from the Crosscheck.

  • ed I saw a post on here somewhere in which you mention a place in deptford that will braze on eyelets. any idea what it was called?

I wanna stick a front rack on my roller but don't think p-clips will be enough if I ever wanna load it up properly.

  • I got some adaptor, what kind of rack and how much weight?

  • ahh behind dans place. didn't know they did brazing.

I've ordered some p-clips for now to use with the basket that came on emma's globe 1 step through as a temporary solution to carry clothes etc but am toying with the idea of having one of the big rack baskets like the gamoh king to chuck on when I need to lug a lot of stuff given my shoulder is currently fubar.

  • I recommended the Gamoh Porteur rather than the King, as you can easily put whatever sized object on it, just put a wired shopping basket on it if needed such, slightly cheaper too.

    Or even a large Carradice;

  • I'm more worried about the mounting points for now rather than what rack.

Got a rack on one of my bikes, not the steamroller though, and that bolts on the wheel axle. Surely a better place to put the load than an eyelet?

  • any idea what brand? have been looking at that option but not much comes up on google

  • @Xabel - SKS Chromoplastics + P-Clips are the way too go. Read back a couple of pages on this thread.

  • thanks for your replies!

Thanks, will have a look, but...
even for 32 tyres? There doesn't seem to be enough clearance for "proper" mudguards.

  • That might be true. I'm running 25s my guards accommodate up to 28. So I can't say for sure the guards for a 32 would fit. But seeing as Surly apply the 'FFF' mantra to the roller, they should be ok. If anything its the brake calipers that are going to give you fitting problems.

Go into an LBS that carries the Chromoplastics and just size up if they could work. Also worth noting that as well as size there are three types Narrow, Wide and Hybrid. I never worked out the difference so I went for the 'Wide' type.

  • I want one of these but my head's not big enough - http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/31501/Surly_Woolen_Cycling_Cap

  • Sorted my creaking!
Turned out it wasn't the drive train, despite that it was my pedalling producing them. Rather the seat post has enough play and thanks to a flexing frame. So that all got greased up properly, sorted.
Should consider replacing it by something slightly wider for a better fit.

  • what size? should be 27.2

  • close enough? http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/surly-wool-cycling-cap-with-ssec-2012-euro-ss-champs-logo-2666-p.asp
Thanks - the grey wouldn't look good with the Creamroller though...the search continues...

  • what size? should be 27.2

That is printed on the post. Waiting until I have access to a proper ruler to see what reality says. Anyway, it's a Cinelli Vai if anyone wants to point out theirs fits without a problem and I just fail.
Though, with enough grease to prevent play and tightening the fuck out of the clamp, it fits. But can slide if I sit hard enough.

  • sounds odd!

i'm mixing grease with climbing chalk to prevent my carbon post from slipping, could be worth a try

  • That sounds like a good hint.

But since I'm more aware of this problem, I try not to slam my weight down the seat (kind of think this is a bad habit too, actually), the seat post isn't slipping now. Problem solved? Maybe.

  • First week with the new steamroller. Liking it more every time I ride it.

  • Think I might be heading towards anti porn, what do you think?

  • Nahhh, looks great! so dose the one above.
