recycling boxes, the type you put glass in are perfect size for records (our local ones are at least). I know someone who has thousands of records and had to move house, he just bundled them in to a pile of about 100 or so, wrapped them in a bin liner and parcel tape.

Really Useful Storage Boxes are pretty standard for moving (and storing) vinyl.

You can usually get a deal at Rymans or similar.
They have a lot of advantages over cardboard. You can stack them easily too.
If you need them to be lighter they have a smaller model.

I've checked out a few threads on Discogs, and there's a place on ebay that sells 13x13x13 boxes which was recommended. That and a shit-ton of tape should be enough to secure them safely. Didn't want to get a load of plastic boxes I'll then have to store post-move.
@Dogtemple - 100 LPs at, say, £20 each is 2 grand - boggles the mind how someone could entrust that to bin liners...

boggles the mind who is paying £20 for all their records.
I would happily do that, it just makes a solid cube, put some sacrificial records on the outside.
-

Lots of mine are older hard to get stuff and worth quite a bit more than £20 each. Even the newer stuff is worth 20+ I would say. That is why they were kept well away from the moving folk and bin liners!

I think you have missed the tape bit and focusing too much on bin liners. a bunch of records stacked tightly with junk records on the outside will be stronger than any plastic or card box.

How many records are you moving?
I would think the plastic boxes would sell pretty quick when you're done with them. I must have more than 50 of them now, hard to imagine life without storage boxes it's been such a long time since they appeared.

Plastic is prob more solid for moving but if you are against that I would rec something more like the ones in the link. They have side walls that are folded in and are a bit more solid. I have a couple and I've lined them with extra cardboard on the insides - bottom and sides along with wrapping in clear tape to protect a bit from any minor liquid damage

I got 4 of these for 100 records, but frustratingly they are just slightly too short to close the lid when full of records. I still like them, but they aren't ideal.

those are for storing PP (when it's not being stored in the balls)

Only about 450, as I only had 1 LP at the start of lockdown, and have been doing a lot of shopping, so they're almost all brand new. I'm thinking of maybe just moving them in the car rather than entrust to the movers. Just involves a bit of negotiations with the OH about what we do with her houseplants/the dog/the child.

• #1515
could you get dog/child/plants in a bunch of these maybe. not sure if the lid would close when filled

I trusted movers with my records, nothing bad happened. Just ask them how they will pack them if you're nervous.

Why are you being mean?
-
• #1518
Sounds like you care about them and that's understandable. The boxes I recommended are great protection for them, that's the route I'd go down.
450 is a lot. 5 boxes would cover it.

how do you know when it is time to replace your stylus? it's a second hand deck so I don't know how many hours are on it. and can you simply replace the little stylus itself or do you have to replace the whole card ? it's a rega exact
-
• #1520
How I can usually tell is that my good condition records start sounding like the bad condition ones - and those sound even worse.
More here - which has the usual advice to just change a stylus on secondhand stuff with unknown use: https://blog.discogs.com/en/how-often-change-turntable-stylus/
Not familiar with the cartridge/stylus, but you can’t replace the stylus yourself - but Rega can: https://www.rega.co.uk/products/exact

thanks
here's where I ask what stylii/cartridges should I be thinking about, if I decide to replace the current stylus ? could go like for like I guess
edit: I've emailed the company that sold me my deck to ask whether they participate in the rega rebuild scheme

I’ve only ever really used Ortofon Concords for DJing. One thing to be aware of is that stylii are spherical or elliptical - and that Rega sounds like it’s probably elliptical and needs to be set up more accurately. There’s an audiophile thread where more knowledgeable folks will be able to give the best advice: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/156217/

Fuck Sandbag.
Recently took delivery of the Kid A Mnesia limited edition box set (£90), 6 months after ordering it.
There’s distortion all over How To Disappear Completely on Kid A. Loads of people are experiencing the same according to Discogs.
Sent an email to them, asking for a replacement disk and got an email back about two days later apologising and saying they’d sort it.
A month goes by and I’ve received an email this week saying that they’ve checked the masters, can’t hear anything wrong and that I’m making it up (at least 40 others on discogs have received the same mail). Offered no replacement and only a refund if I send it back.
Told them to go fuck themselves and they’ve offered 5% discount.
Won’t be buying from them again.

I never understand that. Surely they got test presses and have just gone ‘yeah, that will do’ at best, or worst didn’t even listen to them?!
Just today I was posting on a Facebook group about a record I have where half the fucking tune is just missing. It just randomly cuts off mid vocal in a breakdown. Can’t post the video, but you can see just by looking at it.
Edit: trying to add clip…
How it should sound [5:20]. Incredibly annoying because I got the EP just for this track and it is from that breakdown that you’d mix to the next track 😡

..so Epic Games bought bandcamp apparently 🧐
There's another bandcamp-friday tomorrow, probably a good day to support some of your favourite musicians through that platform while still possible 🙂
If you fill that up it will be pretty heavy, is it strong enough?
When we moved house I dropped all of my vinyl to my parent's house and then grabbed them when we were settled.
I wouldn't let removal people near them and didn't want to risk having them around on moving day
