I made (attempted) to make a vegan puff pastry pasty substitute for a friend today- Filled it with leeks, mushrooms and kale, which I'd pre-cooked in some garlic (otherwise the filling is a bit pathetic and leaves a massive gap)
things I learnt:- It cooks very fast.
- It was awesome.
Neway-
you make 2 doughs.
1 is olive oil (75ml), cold water (gradually added in to make correct consistency- which is a hard dough) and about 100g of SR flour.
the other dough is 125 Plain flour, and cold water (until a similar consistency to the above- firm, elastic and not on your fingers).
Then take both balls out and mix them together, whilst rolling- Roll and layer, roll and layer, etc.
Were good. Would make again. - It cooks very fast.

If you buy the pre-made jus-rol puff/shortcrust pastry it's vegan. Even says so on the packet- completely blew my mind when I learnt this (about a year after being vegan and really missing baking pies).
Obviously making your own pastry rules, but if you're time poor it's excellent. Also it makes me happy when I find something available everywhere that's vegan even when you least expect it. For example Jammy Dodgers, Bourbon biscuits, ginger nuts

Really? That's good to know for the future.
It took me bout 5 mins to make the pastry, though it wasn't proper puff- but 'rough puff'.
I was arguing with my friend about speed and ease of bake time- because my argument was that I don't have a freezer so buying pastry is inefficient, whereas I can knock it up pretty quick these days. -

JAMMY DODGERS ARE YOU SHITTING ME I'm off to the shops right now.
-

Becky?? It's true, the original ones and the lemon ones. If I remember correctly milk features on the list 'may contain traces of....' but it doesn't feature on the ingredients list and is generally a disclaimer from the manufacturer as the same line is used for another product.

Also if you live near a Co-op their jam and their custard doughnuts, and their hot cross buns are A-OK too.

Forget it, Gregory, she's clearly gone, I think you may have hit a nerve there. :)

American Oreos are vegan. But not UK ones.

This was another thing that blew my mind, I brought a ton back when I was last in the US. It's strange when you haven't eaten something for a very long time for reasons that ultimately amount to self control to then taste them again.

IKHTW is taking an awfully long time. She must be going to the shop, eating the JDs on the way back, and going back for more.
-

No, I just sat in the aisles shouting for them to fetch more from the stock room as I ate my way through that which was on the shelves.
Actually, got happily sidetracked with Murder Mysteries on t.v. and have not gone to the shops as today is my Sunday so I don't leave the house unless something or someone is on fire.
Yeah Greg it's me! How the hell did you know that though?!
And I am always annoyed about the Oreo deal, bunch of American recipe books saying 'oreos are fine' and suggesting I find hemp dreams and other such ingredients that clearly don't exist anywhere but Super-uber-hyper-markets.
Final point. In no way have I ever eaten Dancing James, plural or otherwise. -

Mate. Don't scare me right out of my pyjamas that I changed right back into after showering to make sure I wouldn't go out the house.

It was a bit of a long shot, but I knew that you were vegan and had a green bike. You are posting in the vegan thread and have a green bike in your avatar. I didn't before know whether you could whistle, but I now know that too

I don't know, I would leave the house in my pyjamas if there was a fire. :)

In another thread somewhere I saw that you were getting 'dragged along' to support Cream at the polo at Excel too. I think those 3 facts were enough of a base to guess it was you! And I have never seen To Have and To Have Not so the reference is lost on me

It's on YouTube, but worth holding out for until you can catch it at a proper cinema in an analogue copy. Classic film. The BFI should show it every once in a while.

Ahhhh the mystery is solved. Can't wait for that Sherlock ride, you can be on my team please! Do watch the film, it's a good ol' film noir.

London Vegan Drinks is on again this coming Thursday, January 19th, at tibits just off Regent Street:
Bump.

London Vegan Drinks on Thursday was lovely like last time, but it also reminded me of promoting London Vegans a little. The monthly meets are always excellent evenings, but of a different kind--very informative talks form their centrepiece:
http://www.londonvegans.org.uk/
Run by a couple of fantastic, dedicated people.
There are also regular restaurant visits to vegetarian or vegan restaurants.
And for the attention of IKnowHowToWhistle, the monthly meets are on Wednesdays. :)
