  • Also can someone please recommend a recipe for a vegan puttanesca ?
I see a few online, but nothing that makes me want to cook it yet.

  • I reckon the intern sent out an email by accident that was in the 'clutching at straws pile'. I've just got back from Milan and i've never seen so many pretentious fur clad losers in one place, in my life. I'm sure they are aware of it but the Italians clearly are not listening/bothered.

  • Here's an entertaining column about the bestiary and 'mythology' of the 'Warhammer Universe':

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/02/warhammer-fur-pelts-peta-live-flaying-throne-skulls

Depending on which of the Chaos Gods they worship, they may have as their battle cry: “Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne”. Which should give you some idea of their attitude towards the idea of veganism.

  • Vegan 'junk food' is certainly going strong in Hackney:

    http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/news/start_up_of_the_week_shoreditch_obviously_has_a_vegan_doner_kebab_stall_called_what_the_pitta_1_4876172

I don't normally look at F******* pages much, but I'm finding it quite entertaining to see how Temple of Hackney sell out day after day after day. They've just rented a second kitchen to prepare food, so let's see if that will actually satisfy demand or only create more. :)

  • What does everyone eat when they're out cycling? Looking for cheap, healthyish ideas that I can eat every day to keep me going on the bike.

  • How did it work out?

  • How far you cycling? I like doing fast and slow balls.

    Fast:

    dried apricots
    dates
    raisens
    whatever dried fruit

    Slow:

    Peanut butter
    oats
    jam

Mash all raw ingredients together in balls and wrap - fridge overnight. Eat one an hour, depending on effort levels.

  • Went to Mooshies on Brick Lane last night and had their 'beef' burger. Good flavour and extras (reminiscent of a bigmac) but suffers the same problem as a lot of veg burgers I've had in that there's no bite or form to the patty once you start eating and it ends up squishing everywhere and overwhelming the rest of it. Had that weird not sweet/not savoury cloying thing going on too. I reckon if they made the burger out of seitan (and quite thin) it would be great and apparently these exist in the wild, so I'm hunting them down!

  • I work for Deliveroo, just started doing longer shifts, sometimes 5 11 hour shifts a week so it depends how busy it is as to how far I end up cycling. On average I would say about 3-5 miles each hour. Both of those sound good though! Might try making a few of each, thanks!

  • Agreed re: burgers - I found the Americans / Canadians have nailed it so far with veg burger.. We are slow playing catch up :(

  • No worries! Its quicker / easier / cheap to make your own instead of stoping for a snack every few hours and satisfying knowing youve made it yourself! DIY

  • Anywhere you'd recommend in London (if you're from these parts)?

  • Coop donuts, many of

  • Scurvy is life

  • Burgers from the waiting room in deptford where decent if I remember right and cheap.

  • How did it work out?

To me, it's even weirder to make dough with gluten than to make seitan yourself the kneading-dough-under-water-way. The instant 'gumminess' feels so strange to me, while making the dough as well as later, chewing the finished pieces.
Of course it's less of a hassle that way and you don't need to throw huge amounts of spices at it (compared to 'regular' seitan that only gets it flavour through simmering and steeping in massively overspiced broth).

I ommited the washing-in-milk as I hate milk and milk-alternatives, but had no problems breading the soaked pieces with flour / breadcrumbs without it. Added kurkuma for more colour / spice. They fried beautifully.

As I said I dislike the gumminess / springiness - it's just strange to chew, so I have to improve this. More kneading, adding something to the dough, I don't know. Beating it with a hammer?
One of the vegan fastfood restaurants here in Berlin used to make a seitan "steak", which had a different (better) texture, which is sort-of what I would like to do.

I had leftovers the next day, two breaded, large-ish pieces - which I cut in stripes and fried again with some onions & garlic - this was a good Idea, tasted great a day later and was nicer to chew.

Will definitely try again - thanks again for the recipe!

  • I suppose that must be partly why Temple of Hackney is so popular--they've cracked that one. Have you tried it yet?

  • I've not made it there myself but judging by their social media I can't help but feel Temple of hackney is so popular due to shrewd marketing rather than the actual product

  • That too, definitely. What I had recently was definitely among the best vegan burgers I've had, though. The chips were very good, too. As said above, it's still way too expensive, but let's see what happens about that.

  • I went on opening day and the chickn burger was really good (chips not so much, especially for the money - frozen and poured out of a mccains bag) - I want to go back and try some of the other options but $$ and queue are putting me off at the moment!

  • Best burger I've had is from The Hive. Lots to chew and no slop. I've not tried Big V London's burgers yet, but am going this Saturday to Broadway Market. They also have stalls at Borough Market and Greenwich Market.

  • In case it's not been mentioned: Club Mexicana at Pamela on Kingsland Road. The food is amazing, spicy and hot. Good prices too: most dishes are £4.5-£5.5. And pretty much everything on the drinks menu is vegan. A few wines are marked as 'non-vegan' and easy to spot. Make sure you book or take a seat at the bar.

  • And while I'm at it: Pesky's have started their year long residency at The Yard Theatre in Hackney Wick. Very near to the velodrome.

  • All the friends
