  • Where can you find nutritional yeast usually?
Also- cashews for not loads of moneys?

  • Any independent health food shop usually sells nutritional yeast, never seen it in Holland & Barrett.

  • Where can you find nutritional yeast usually?

..health food shop or organic food store?

Where I live it's rather hard to find, I mostly order online with some other stuff like vital wheat gluten.

  • You will find it in good wholefood stores. In London, I've only ever seen the Marigold products; look carefully at the labelling as they do a large range of stock/bouillon powders which are not nutritional yeast and the right products only say what they are in small type.

As Laner says, Holland and Barrett never stock this but they do stock a few other Marigold products so you can waste some time looking.

There is some debate about how essential B12 is to your diet. It is undeniably otherwise hard to find in vegan foodstuffs.

bruce those recipes look brilliant, thank you for them

Raw cauliflower florets coated in that sauce are great. Steamed ones would also be good I'm sure but try it raw just to see; leave them a little while to let the flavour mix some.. I have to be careful to have enough cauliflower to use up all the sauce, otherwise I will just eat the remainder.

  • Regardless of how important b12 is to a vegan diet, nooch is bloody awesome. Which reminds me, I haven't made mac n cheese in ages

  • Where can you find nutritional yeast usually?
    At Lucy's house.

  • Um, E numbers are a standard across Europe. That's kind of the point. You can also find detailed product breakdowns for these on many English language websites. Failing that, you could ask the help of those of us on this thread who speak and read German.

As it is, there's nothing in the labelling to specify the source of the additives, so you would either have to trust in their own statements that it's all 100% vegan or check with the Vegan Society.

  • People miss the things they've given up. Unfortunately, trying to replicate them closely too often involves science.

On the other hand, if you just want to have the same range of flavours and textures available to non-vegans (e.g. a way to add creaminess to a dish) then there are usually non-artificial methods which are simply not used in UK/Euro cuisine, but have often been used in other cultures for ages (e.g. cashews). It's where you want something that looks and tastes like dairy cream and doesn't separate after a day in the fridge that things become awkward.

Actually, it's the carrageenan that would put me off those cheeses (and is why I make my own almond milk).

  • Has anyone been to alkarmel - did a double take as I cycled past earlier as I've not seen it before...

NEW Alkarmel vegetarian cafe, Clapham 95 Landor Road SW9 9PH. Open: Mon-Thu 07.00-21.00, Fri-Sun 07.00-late. Hot meals £3.50-4.50 such as chilli or curry and rice, stew, pasta. Sandwiches, panini. Falafels, mezze, hot dogs, burgers, soups. Drinks £1-1.50. BYO. twitter.com/alkarmel_cafe

  • I was almost properly vegan for about 6 months, but didn't keep track of supplementing things so would have weeks at a time just feeling rubbish and run down, and I was starting to turn white. Also missed cheese just too much, though 'sheeze' is made locally on the isle of bute.

Discovered i'm actually pretty lactose intolerant, so chopping cow's milk out of my diet as much as possible has made life post-veganism much better.

During that 6 months didn't miss meat at all, I felt on the whole great, skin was amazing, eyes felt and looked clearer, only had 1 cold, and poo smelt and looked a lot better lol.
So would defo go vegetarian + lactose free, spare the odd massive chunk of awesome cheese.

  • But the time to prepare (decent tasty actual) food that was vegan proof, and the cost (even living in a city with a good selection of places to get ingredients) was just too much for me, prob in the region of £8-10 a day!

  • Time to prepare really is an issue, as well as inconveniency.
I often have to bring prepared lunch in tupperware to work or other places where there would be no vegan food to get but plain bread or maybe a banana.

I don't know prices where you live, but cooking vegan isn't more expensive where I'm at.

  • I am both goal-oriented and bloody minded, if I decide to do cheap veganism for a bit it just isn’t a problem. Making curries from scratch rather than buying paste takes about 15-20 mins extra and saves £££, making a big vat of soup and freezing it in portions probably costs about a fiver (the veg stock is definitely the only expensive thing which you could, given enough time and determination, make yourself) and feeds you for days, and saves loads of time in the evenings if you’re knackered after work and can only just bring yourself to defrost something rather than cook a whole meal. Cooking with housemates or your partner = instant lessening of labour (a problem shared is a problem halved) (re:cooking, at least).

my quickest default post-work snack is cous cous with half a tablespoon of veg stock in it, with some boiling water and a plate over the top for a couple of minutes. Instantly tasty and while it’s fluffing up (or cooking if I put it on the hob/in the microwave) I can dice some veg to steam/fry and whack it in.

Veg is really cheap (unless you’re buying solely organic, sorry) and you can get these extremely helpful charts - http://www.veganviews.org.uk/vv95/vv95foodchart.gif - in loving hut in archway (next forum ride?) for about £3. the quality of that link isn’t great but it’s really a wonderful chart

My mother in an incredibly uncharacteristic acceptance of my being vegan (still) has asked me to give a talk to her WI group in Oxfordshire about vegan baking and cooking next month. I’m nervous but quite excited to show them how delicious and easy vegan baking is. I think I’ll be making a powerpoint presentation (nerdlyf) to pool my various strata of knowledge about vegan cuisine from a few years working in food. Would anyone be interested in seeing it when I do? If so I can send it to you.

Speaking of cake (never far from my mind unfortunately, sorry folks) I had a Ruby Tuesday mint choc cake from Greenwich market last week and it was AMAZING. Best vegan cake I’ve had in London.

Anyone know anything about Veganz opening in London soon? I thought it was supposed to be “spring 2014” but it’s all gone rather quiet on that front

  • When are we doing this place in Euston then? READY2NOM

This Saturday, before the St Pauls ride? (Or after, if you've moved it to the afternoon)

  • it is in the afternoon. i can fit it in between afternoon ride and my evening plans if sven hasn't absolutely destroyed me (not a euph). sweet, how about 6pm?

  • the cost (even living in a city with a good selection of places to get ingredients) was just too much for me, prob in the region of £8-10 a day!

Just how expensive are vegetables in Scotland? Do you have to get them flown in from civilisation?

  • Works for me.

..just do a google image search for "liz cook chart"

  • ^ Sexist ;)

Seriously though - these do sound like incredibly good nights. It's just a pity they don't charge peasant prices.

  • It's a lovely chart. There does seem to be a trend with vegans and B12 coming from processed fortified foods.

Does anyone here avoid the them and opt for a supplement instead?

xsvcx got me a really good b complex supplement and it's got loads of other good things in it too - http://www.baldwins.co.uk/supplements-essences/vitamins/vitamin-c/terranova-b-complex-with-vitamin-c-50-vegetarian-capsules
