Dynamo Lights

  • Thanks both. It was the side beam for descending I really wondered about. Sounds like a grea city light but perhaps not the best for big mountains.

  • Definitely not the right type of light for big mountains IMO.

Wait slightly longer and see if this finally makes it to the market?

  • Interesting thanks. I could email them.

It's for a friend not me, I'm out of the loop on road lights.

I remember my supernova being ok, but not that wide beam, so struggled on fast descents. My klite MTB one is great for that.

  • You probably want something like the Supernova M99 DY Pro.
This guy has the best comparisons, you can see the difference in beam patterns:

  • I didn't know that website. Thank you so much

  • Maybe I should send him my klite to add to the teat

  • Front ring around the lens is left-hand threaded, is usually pretty tightly screwed on, then after that the rear around the button comes off (normal thread, I think) and reveals some small torx screws to remove. Then the innards slide out forwards, taking care to feed the wires through and not to twist things too much, or those side LEDs are at risk.

Had I not damaged the LEDs I would have tried to seal the dead rubber gaskets with something, but as it was starting to become a bit of a botch job I bought a new one before winter came.

  • That's interesting. I was going to hit up a TCR rider to try and get a discounted E3 Triple but they don't make them any more. Now I'm wondering what dynamo lights to go for (I want one for the Surly, the Crux possibly and my partner's bike/s). I have a klite on my MTB but they're very spendy so I want something 'good enough' but more like this M99 DY Pro (such catchy names). 273EU is still pretty spendy considering I paid not much more than 100E for my two E3 Triples.

Our use-case is variable though - in town, road audaxes and off-road adventures. I've used the Supernova Triple for most stuff and like it but the klite is cool too, especially for MTBing.

  • The M99 DY Pro has a bit lower light output at slower speeds than other lights but then gets a lot brighter, so it's probably best at descents.

  • in town, road audaxes and off-road adventures

M99 looks good for both tbf. Has a bright dipped beam for road and full beam for off

  • fwiw I'm about to flog a NIB Supernova E3 Pro 2 + E3 Rack Rear combo for I dunno, £120

Looking new for myself, I'm between a Sinewave Beacon and Igaro C1, possibly Caminade Llum if I were in EU.

I want something that can be totally toggled off for day riding efficiency and forgoes the need for a USB converter. At the end of the day supposedly all the dynamo lights are maxing out circa 800 lumens even if rated higher, as the LEDs/hub draw can't supply more even at high speeds. So I'll supplement with a battery light for descents

  • Supernova E3 Pro 2

That's not as bright as the Triple though is it? It might be good enough for the Surly though, which is mostly used around town but might do some off-road UK adventures if it ever stops raining (and I have a free weekend)

  • Igaro C1

Interesting. Never knew about this one. £350 though.

  • M99 is what I'd try if I was in the market for a serious front light.
Some of the boutique lights are nice, but StVO compliant just makes sense if you ride roads.

  • Lots of mixed feedback to its release but no real reviews yet - The Igaro peeps have been pretty responsive to me but there are some weird quirks positive and negative
Rain cover for the USB ports doesn't work if lying the bike sideways overnight or riding without fenders
    No manual switches
    A pretty janky aesthetic...
    Also it's £420 without mounts :D

The draw however is it conceivably has really good if not market leading lighting characteristics and USB charging quality in one package

  • Rain cover for the USB ports doesn't work

That's a possible deal breaker. Water ingress killing a light (or even just the charging) is unacceptable.

"janky aesthetic" is how I roll though. (I still have a prototype Igaro)

    £420 without mounts

That's heading towards klite pricing (I wonder how much klite cost in AUD?)

  • Problem is I don't know how any of them compare with an E3 Triple or klite MTB, which are the only two dynamo lights I've used. Max light on descents is where you want it though, obviously and that's how the klite works - quite low crawling uphill and then bright when you're doing over 20kph or whatever.

  • Is the high-beam activated with a switch then?

  • Yeah, in their defense the PCB and USB charging section is replaceable (although would not want it to fail mid expedition) - but I don't know why they didn't just have a rubber grommet/door also

For my use hopefully it wouldn't matter as I'd run it above a handlebar roll taking up most of the spray, either on the stem mounts or a DrJ0n mission deck

Tbh I've just talked myself round into keeping the Supernova set above. I'll just Son Coax junction box it and have supplementary battery lights

  • I always take a Exposure Joystick or Diablo on road and off-road stuff anyway. Even if it's not used while riding, you still use it for finding bivvy spots or setting up camp or looking through bags when you've stopped or repairs or lots of other things.

  • That's not as bright as the Triple though is it?

The triple doesn't have a cut off though so isn't really road appropriate if you're looking for something to do both. Sure you can use it but it's not really ideal or probably legal.

  • I've been using it for the last 10 years. The brightness legality thing is bullshit - it's mostly about the light angle anyway and fucking 95% of cars are brighter than anything a dynamo can put out so fuck them.

  • I think it's the shape of the beam, not the brightness. Most of these ones have a crisp line cut off so they're max brightness up to the point of blinding. Rather than having to point it down so it's dim at the top of the beam or just blinding oncoming traffic. I'm sure most people with the triple are using it on road but it is specifically an off-road light.

  • For comparison, halogen carlights are about 55W, a SP-8 is 3W.
