If you fly to Oz with Air New Zealand you can take your bike over for free... I had a frame shipped from the US a few years back, think it was about $70...

I'm clearly going about this the wrong way, but there's a frame I want in New York which I was going to get the other half to bring back on a plane when next over there. Any idea how much this would cost?
And then I'm moving to Oz next year so would want to ship it. Does anyone have the answer to the shipping to Oz question?get them to go on Virgin.
Free. And additionally most of Virgin's partner airlines (such as Air NZ) will do the same.
Genius-
as long as it weighs less than 32kg, so go nuts, bring back 6. -

has anyone ever compared the various handlers to ship for UK to north america on a frame+fork like box? i'm thinking it would be about 100cm x 65 cm x 15cm & 4kg? fedex/ups/royal/dhl who is cheapest?
if no one has done this i'll investigate and post my findings

recently needed to ship my dads bulky MTB from Malaga in Spain to Recife in Brasil. Not the most direct of routes by any means (turns out it was just too big to fit in the teeny tichy plane from Malaga to Lisbon). So we boxed it up and took it to the cargo section of the airport (operated by an ofshoot of Iberia I believe... bigger airports will have more options). Cost about €250 to send it over and would take about a week to arrive. Bear in mind this was a bulky MTB with accessories weighing in at over 20kg.
So yea, check out with freight/cargo operators, as they will usually be cheaper than DHL or similar (but it isn't door-to-door) -

One of the best pieces of advice I got on this forum!

so the post office will take a bike box?
Thinking of selling an old bmx soon and it'll most likely need posting. Can get a BMX sized box from work but need to know if I can just drop it off at my local PO or do they have size/weight restrictions.
If not what are the alternatives? Courier seems like a way more expensive option.
How much does/will it cost? Bike is about 12kg at a guess.

That involves dropping it off at the post office doesn't it?Answer my own question:
You can take your item to a local Post Office®. All Post Offices® offer our express48, globalvalue and globaleconomy services. The larger 'express' Post Offices® sell all our services. Post Office® locations can be found by visiting our Post Office® locator. To find the express offices choose 'Parcelforce delivery services' from the drop down list

I've used these guys 2 or 3 times now, no problems at all, they come and pick up etc. Just ask LBS if they have a spare bike box you can have. Take off pedals and bars. Pack the rest of the box with newspaper.
Next day delivery for £12.

Didn't want to start a new thread for such a menial question but.... Has anyone had any delay in receiving large packages from the states? I had a bike posted to me 4 weeks ago this Saturday through USPS, it was sent at the base rate so not sure how long it should take. Should I be worried about it yet?

It could be held up by the UK receiver, most likely to be Parcelfarce. I had a frame shipped from Canadia last year and it took two weeks for them to process it.
Do you have a tracking number?
-
• #45
4 weeks seems pretty excessive.
I've had two frames shipped from the US, one was a MTB frame with USPS and took about 6 days including a w/e, and the other was my Bianchi with Fedex and it only took 3 days door to door, and I'm in OZ.
Agree with andyp and check if you have a shipping/tracking number and try to trace it.

Hi, newbie alert! Just joined and saw this thread and thought perhaps someone could advise. I need to send a full suspension MTB to Holland, could anyone advise on the least expensive carrier for this?
Thanks in anticipation

By 'eck! That's a LOT less than I've been quoted! Even by DHL themselves.
Thanks for the quick reply BTW.

I'm planning on getting a frame in UK, it's cheaper than in germany and Polish market is just developing, so almost everyone is getting stuff from abroad or what was used/is left here...
My question is, would it be better to pay for shipping via shop, around 40 pounds or should my friend get it as he studies in UK and take it with him on board while flying back home? Any experience with european flights? costs? etc.? -

Thats coz companies like interparcel bulk in bulk from DHL so get hugely discounted prices.
transglobal.org.uk is also quite good
