More bars should offer decent non alcoholic drinks. Syrup coke and manky old juice just don't cut it, so for now mines a Guinness.
True what other options are there apart from over rriced ae and coffee if they are served.
I'm off the booze due to meds at the mo. Makes live more interesting as I still do stupid things but don't use alcohol as an excuse.

i guess it's about self control. i love the taste/flavours of good wine/beer/spirits but hate getting really pissed i have a switch that kicks in and i start drinking water or just stop the alcohol when i get to a certain level of inebriation. i hate the room spinning/confusion and the puking that can sometimes follow. it's been years since i have got that pissed but do occasionally get a bit merry and offend my dinner guests.
that isn't self control, that's not liking drinking too much. so it's very easy to stop if you're enjoying it anymore. self control is stopping when you don't want to.

Did Chris Evans tell you that?

he owns a pub down the road, as it goes.
see the vested interest? he owns a chain of pubs, and goes on the radio encouraging the public to drink.

Self control is knowing what is an acceptable amount, the likelyhood of wanting a drink goes up with the more drinks you have. so deciding we'll finish this bottle but i don't want a rum after the dessert wine is self control. it don't always see it as an internal conflict

Very true. Back in Oz land you can get a lemon(ade), lime and (agostura) bitters just about anywwhere, probably one of the best drinks ever if you were not drinking at the pub, or were the skipper. That's designated driver for a car load of boozy mates, often the pub you want to go to is miles from home, and there's no bus or train. Some places used to have wrist bands for the skipper and then you'd get free non alcoholic drinks all night.
I asked for a lemon, lime & bitters here once and got a rather perplexed response, along the lines of, "we don't do those here lad, you can have coke and like it"

give Alan Carr's ' how to control alcohol' a browse if you fancy quitting booze

1pm indeed. I could murder an IPA now, first few slurps to take the chilled heavy head off and wash out the salt from those pork scratchings. just the autumn warmer to help this rain pass

I wondering about going teetotal. I don't drink a lot, but if I'm out it'll be 2 or 3 pints. Over the last year or so I've found that most beers/lagers give me an instant hangover. Within 20 minutes of drinking a pint I've got a shitty headache. That, for me is the main reason I'm thinking about teetotal (although, I'm finding the bourbon is going down fine...)
There's only so much J2O you can drink before you feel sick...
same, especially real ale, 3 pints, and after an hour or so, my head is splitting and my emotional state becomes very somber.
1pint or maybe 2 over the course of 3 hours seems to be my limit.

Thanks for inspiration, I'm running out of ideas when at the bar. And bloody SICK of stupid bar staff giving me ginger ale when I ask for ginger beer. Bloody ingrates.

but it takes self control to stop when you are already under the influence of alcohol.
i used to drink every day, not much just a glass of wine or a 33cl belgian beer with my evening meal, now i don't drink as often and go 4-5 days without any alcohol.
that's me self-controlling the amount of alcohol i imbibe. :-) -

good luck with the bar staff at your local. Anywhere that serves cocktails should know how.

Best thing about them is you don't drink them too quickly, because of the bitters and you can have 2 or 3 in a evening as it's not sickly sweet.
A rock shandy, I'll try that one next time I'm not boozing it up.
yeah i have hit that level over the past few years, been caught off gaurd twice when the company and drink was very good and the night flew by.
I also found buying better wines and spirits makes you take your time. i have an amazing bottle of armagnac that has last over 2 years. its one to savour
