I reacted completely differently. Which shocked both myself and my girlfriend. My girlfriend works in upper clapton so i had decided to walk both our bikes up to her so we could cycle around and enjoy what was left of the evening. When I met we stood for a few minutes while she packed everything into her bag, as she was doing this she screamed and something hit me in my back. I turned thinking WTF to see 3 teenagers, the lead one said he wanted our bikes and the other one pulled my girlfriends out of my hand and laughed. At this point i simply got angry, i chucked my bike at the lead guy, unprepared he staggered backwards and then I let out a torrent of punches and kicks, which eventually led to me having a black eye and two of the assailants having a combination of broken jaw/ribs/ perforated eardrum?
I look back and think what a stupid position I put both myself and my girlfriend in, but part of me (the alpha male part) thinks I rock!
Scary situation mate, did your girlfriend mind living their after the incident?

Nice one, pieces of shit deserve it. That's all they are, pieces of shit.

Can't the fucking police see how out of hand this is getting?? It's one thing taking the risk of leaving your bike locked up, but now the fear of actually riding it and trying to avoid the unfortunate occasion of being jacked?? What a fucking joke.

There are so many arseholes out there, little idiots that are nothing but cowards, thats why they hang around in gangs, so they can bully and intimidate people, because they would be too scared to do it on their own.
Be vigilant out there and I think the best advice given here is anticipation, prepare for the worst and hope for the best, getting into a confrontation with these idiots is the last thing you want to do, and after having seen it first hand I will tell you why.
You might be a tough nut, you might kick the shit out of them there and then, but a lot of these little wankers are part of larger gangs, or have lots of other idiotic friends around them.
So as great a thing as you feel you might have done at the time, imagine your surprise next week when after seeing where you cycle/hang out travel, they are waiting round the corner of a road to jump you, except this time they're there with 10 of their mates, tooled up and waiting to pay you back for hurting their worthless pride, now you're really fucked.
Worse still, they catch you with your girlfriend, and she gets a knife to the kidney or something equally as nasty, i'm sure you'd feel really good about winning "that little fight" then, as she's bleeding away in front of you.
No matter how big and tough you are, sometimes you need to think about the bigger picture before you get involved in these things, and the consequences for other people, not just yourself.
Fighting should be the last option when you have no where else to go, unless you want to be continually watching your back. -

I guess you gotta be more aware. Avoiding confrontation obviously is the best solution, though if I was a fighter, which i'm not, i'd love to kick their fucking heads in. I often put the pedal to the metal when I see gangs of kids loitering about the footpaths, you just never know. That can be the only precaution.

I think I actually would want to kill them if that ever happened to my bird, I proper would, no fucking mercy. Blood and death. I should have a fag, getting a bit angry here!!!!

wise words by the way james

Cheers man, jeez you should see some of the places near where I grew up, don't think I would even dream of locking my bike up there let alone riding through at night, do you know Ilford?

nah, but I think I remember you mentioning it too me. I get a bit edgy living on brooke road, there's always shit going on and then there's the "murder mile" which starts just at the bottom. Shit hole.

Yeah, I think the best defence is just keeping your wits about you, and keep moving at speed through dodgy areas.

Don't get me wrong Hobo, I think its great that you kicked the shit out of some of those idiots, and I think i'm not alone in saying that plenty of people would take great pleasure in doing the same, my point was that sometimes you need to think about the bigger picture, and the people around you as well.
If you had no other choice at that point then fair enough, but it should always be the last resort as although you may get out unscathed, the people/person you're with (your loved one in this instance), might not get so lucky. -

I admire your reaction Hobo, I got pelted with stones on the canal by Camden a few months back and invited to "come and have a go"......I rode on, I've got a son and don't want to get stabbed but it still makes me mad when I think about it, I felt bullied by a bunch of kids. There was a triple shooting near my place by Stoke Newington Green the other night, kids on kids......there are some scarey little fuckers out there.

• #65
why don't you make some spokecards reading 'beware the hoodies'. Attention raising and that.

I hate to say it, but I think the polices move to put more armed coppers on the street, seems to be the only sensible response at the moment, as these little shits don't seem to care about or be scared of the normal police.

Not being funny, but riding by canals is asking for trouble in my opinion. Always scum knocking about and there's no real easy way of escaping, I guess that why turds like to congregate about canal side paths.

i've had the shit kicked out of me by 7 dudes back in the day skateboarding in sydney about 17 years ago... unfortunately it's pretty hard to fight that many people... especially if they have weapons, i'm just lucky they didnt have knives as a friends friend got a knife thworn at them 2 nights before my incident and ended up with a metal pole cracke dove rhis had and unconciouss and concusion and the rest...
this was unprovoked assulat for the sake of it, no robbery intended, they grabbed my skateboard and hit me with it as they're friends kicked the shit out of one flatmate until they realised she was a girl and her boyfriend, also a flatmate bailed... then they all came for me so i had not choice but to get away as fast as possible, couldn't fight 15 guys, felt soemthing heavy on the back of my head and woke up in a circle of 7 guys kicking the shit of out me and a dude about to smash a metal bin on my head... fun times... luckily a massive rugby dude interupted them and gave me the chance to bail into a chemist...
oh what fun, i ride a past geffrey musem all the time...

im 15 and ive kinda been in the middle of these kind of people
the main percentage are harmless and perfectly reasonable.
most of these people are worth reasoning with ( if you get the chance)
but theres a group of proper lethal, probably young adults, that really have nothing else to do except act like complete twats.
if youre on your commute home at like 9ish then i wouldnt say theres much to worry about ( maybe on the murder mile in hackney like slay said) but most teenagers standing around on street corners are doing so because they have nothing else to do and are normally proper cool people. -

no offense mate, but I think you're talking out of your arse

Indeed, I don't ride down canals, I don't get the attraction of it anyways, much faster on the road!

I think you have some growing up to do before you can properly comment on the subject mate, your opinion here is heavily flawed to say the least. -

Where does it say he visits poor areas for a giggle?
-
• #73
no i used to live in hackney, i dont visit poor areas because id probably get mugged by the same twats that are jacking all of your bikes and giving you a shit time
im not saying i can properly comment on the subject but i think i have a good viewpoint, most of you guys are 20plus? im not sure but kids didnt carry knives when you were young, im just trying to say that some of you are getting a bit too apprehensive.
im only trying to put across a point from a completely different angle -

How about we set up a ride? The scum ride? Trawl around through east, a beer for any stolen bike spotted. Sounds a good idea to me!

You don't know anything about this kid and you shoot him down before he has barely said anything.
you might just learn something here you old codgers. you might not, cos joelovesfixed might be entirely not from in the middle of the yoots dem in their dodgy form, but he may well be.
go on joelovesfixed, i'm all ears, specially the bit about reasoning your way out of situations like this..
Just to add to this, a friends ex-girlfriend was pushed of of her bike and others in front of her on Hackney road right by Hackney farm, I'm not sure of all of the circumstances because it was a few months before I joined the forum but it seemed like they just thought it was funny to push someone off of their bike. Its absolutely appaulling that kids could do this especially to a girl!
