  • If one of those kids came to you for a job, would you give them a chance? Would you be brave enough to offer support or would you prefer the safest option and give it to someone who is closer to what you are?

Only if they went to a good school and knew the secret handshake.

Seriously, assuming they had the skills, talent and enthusiasm, and the right attitude then yes, I would consider them for a job.

With the caveat that self-adopted accents are permissable things to take the piss out of.

  • dont these people just make you want to turn vigilante and teach these c*nts a lesson? Ever since my last bike was nicked i bought a new, ctrong as f*ck chain that i wear around my shoulder. If that time comes I think it will be used as protection.

  • 11 years for a life .. what a joke..

  • Is that really true?

    Yep

I don't if it's bike related. Some 19 yr old radical gangster dude form north london is serving a shitty 11 years for stabbing to death a 16 yr old kid who he had mistaken for having sum beefssss wiv. He calls himself the king of swagger apparently, still bopping about like he's wiv his cruuuuuuuuu. Why can't people like that just die??

Now he gets better drugs and learns about new crimes, personally king of swagger (i remember the story well) is pointless and could do with being put down. sadly this never happends to a new way to deal with it needs to be found.
one day he will get stung by a bigger dog and i doubt he will see 30.

  • Do I really have to explain how social privilege manifests as economic opportunity?

    yes

I don't have time. Just take a look out the window for now.

  • Wow - they've got some incredibly compelling arguments. Thanks for the tip off.

  • What do you advocate for those who ask to have a go on peeps bikes and then cycle off?

well I didn't need it anymore, since being called a fakenger numerous times, I thought to myself, some of these guys in dalston need to some crack so i'll let them take off with my cool fied gear street bike. Besides, I still have the ever faithful apollo ten speed to ride.

ok, when I get angry I say say some fucking ridiculous stuff, offensive and should hold back. When I hear of innocent people having their lives taken down to crime, the scum responsible don't deserve to live in my opinion.
I'm sorry about the lorry comment jonty, but still I don't like being ridiculed as someone who doesn't take cycling seriously. I've paid for and built all my bikes myself.

It's ok old bean, I wasn't offended. Still think you're a plum though.

  • I don't think anyone is suggesting that accent is the sole problem - I'm certainly not. It's more an easily recognisable signifier for cultural identifiers which most people on here take for granted.

I was referring to the posts where people said 'as if anyone's ever failed to get a job because of their accent'. My point is that class prejudice works in much more subtle and insidious ways than that - in my own field, the disadvantage is absolutely ingrained, and very difficult to get around. I don't think we disagree.

that's cool, I still don't like you for your fakenger comment.

  • Classic... ;]

I refuse to go to a restaurant called 'Crazy Homies'.

    gasp

  • i'd prefer to be called a cunt

  • Blimey there's some seriously mentile behaviour here. Scary.

    Funny, but scary.

  • Why don't we give everyone in Hackney a free bike- surely that would solve the problem, as no one would need to steal anyone elses?

Obviously you'd have to make them decent bikes, but I expect that would be cheaper than locking up bike thieves and so forth.

  • that is top drawer, neil.

but then where would all the fuckwits buy their cheap bikes?

Aah cool, I misunderstood you. Yeah, we do agree. w00t!

  • they'd all need a blinging aerospoke though

  • Olliver would be able to help out with the statistics here but I'm pretty sure that the majority of people in the UK have a bike- albeit a rusty one they last used in 1998 that is now in the shed tied to a ladder with a hose.

So it's clearly a desirable thing to have, even if you then ignore it.

We just take that a step further and make sure that anyone without a bike now has one, so they have no need to steal yours.

To answer Richie's point you'd have to then extend the same courtesy to everyone else to completely destroy the market in stolen bikes, but that's way cheaper than giving all the banks another 20 billion quid every three months, and might do more measurable good.

  • heh heh.. i like that. except a currency would develop in bicycles. a bicycle would no longer be enough. japanese carbon track frames would be being sold on brick lane for a tenner.

  • Remove the motivation for the crime=reduction in crime, all theory sadly.

Be interesting to see it in action.
