well done Sammy. look forward to meeting you soon.

99% certain this is the next one - transport is fucked, so I'm looking at other options - holding post for now:
Sunday 6th December '09 - "Chilterns – Field Beckons, As Train Admits, 'I Am A Sham'"
42 mile loop from Beaconsfield. Undulating.
Route : http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2711163 (+5 miles each way up the A355)
Train Out - Marylebone @ 8.54am, arriving Beaconsfield 9.33am
Train Back - Beaconsfield @ some point between noon and 1pm.
- shootthebreeze
- BMMF (59" fixed, or fully mudguarded geared audax if it's pissing down)

I'm going to look into the tube too. Trains to Amersham were few and far between... and they involved a replacement bus from Beaconsfield anyway :(
-
• #237
Nah, the tube's fucked too - I assume it's a shared overground/underground stretch of track being attended to on the day.
Perhaps someone with local knowledge (stb?) can give their opinion on the proposed hike out/back along the A355. What's it like? Hellish? Okay if we ride as a bunch?

It looks like almost £9 for a Network return, and £6.50 for a Groupsave4. Why so much? It's not that far :(

i have to be out of london on one of either the two next weekends. just waiting on a few beyond-my-controlables to sort themselves then can know whether i can make this. but hear me when i say i would very much like to.
if logistics turns into a proper bitch from hell we can take on one of the other routes bmmf. though would be nice to get into the chilterns.

The onus is on shoots for this one. I'm not sure if that's how you use the word 'onus'. Which is undeniably reminiscent of 'anus'.
The anus is on shoots for this one.
Back up plan will be Welwyn/Herts/Beds…

That section of the A355 is not ideal. I have not cycled it but it can be pretty fast with swooping bends and I am not sure how wide it is. The long hill down into Amersham does have emergency gravel braking verges though...
It may be nicer to go through Winchmore Hill.
-
• #247
Thanks for the info. The section through Winchmore Hill doesn't look too difficult to navigate, but I'll see what shoots reckons is the easiest option. At least if we went on the A-road, we'd be a large visible entity rather than a lone rider.

How fitting
cos that is that on which I am sat staring out to sea reading about all your exploits
from Sunday.
well done to all that did it.
seems like a million miles from what I'm up to...
mainly cos it is.
the road from Beaconsfield will be fine in a group if needs be.
sure will be a tough one for me, having not been on a bike for a bit.
Just working on my cardio in the sea... -

What do you think? Is it all sounding a bit ominous? It's over the 40 mile limit (and the extra mileage is not flat), and a bit convoluted. For logistical reasons, I'm starting to lean heavily towards the Welwyn option. That way it's a flat 40 miles (apart from the short half-way hill), and I'm sure the trains will be easier/cheaper/more regular.
That's my gut instinct.
And it's a N/NE departure point, which marries up with the majority demographic of the group so far :/
And just to prove he really can be a clean boy over winter.....well for a short time.
