You mean Nokia right... don't they own the lions share of Symbian?
And they do... hence Nokia and Apple being involved in a legal case of their own.
The real winner is probably Palm, who have a patent arsenal on the older smartphones that could probably take down any of these upstarts.
Palm also look very cheap at the moment.
No-one owns Symbian any more. It's available for free to anyone under the terms of the Eclipse Public License. The Symbian Foundation, an open source software foundation, integrates, releases and promotes the platform.
Palm are dead. I'd be surprised if they are still in business by the end of the year. Their patent portfolio, which isn't that good to be honest, is the only thing of value they have left.

Apple's iPhone OS and Google's Android open mobile platform grew the most last year, according to analyst house Gartner, with number one smartphone OS Symbian shrinking further.
Symbian lost 5.5 percentage points to end last year with 46.9 per cent market share, versus 52.4 per cent in 2008. Meanwhile Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform also lost out, shrinking by 3.1 percentage points to end 2009 in fourth place with 8.7 per cent market share.
Gartner said competitive pressure from the likes of Apple and RIM, along with "continued weakness" in Nokia's high-end devices portfolio, hit Symbian's market share.
Last week the Symbian Foundation announced its first release since going fully open source - Symbian ^3 - which could arrive on devices by Q3 this year. "Symbian had become uncompetitive in recent years but its market share, particularly on Nokia devices, is still strong," noted Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, in a statement. "If Symbian can use this momentum, it could return to positive growth."Sales of Android-based phones will grow faster than any other mobile platform over the next four years, but Nokia’s Symbian OS will retain its top position, IDC has forecast.
The research firm says that by 2013 worldwide smartphone shipments will top 390 million units, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.9%.
Symbian will remain no. 1 because of the strength of Nokia in markets outside the US, IDC said.

Nexus One UK "confirmed" for April, although they were hoping for March.
http://www.gaj-it.com/15902/google-nexus-one-uk-release-date-confirmed-as-april/This cheapass Sony is pissing me off so much I'm not sure I can wait. Luckily I'm being kept busy enough not to order its replacement.

Are you speaking of the Sony X10. I have been considering this as my next phone, not a good idea?

No. I have a cheap piece of shit prepaid that Mal bought when she lost my other phone.
I do still think the X10 is a bad idea though. :)

Has anyone tried MyTracks? Looks pretty neat
My Tracks is an application for your AndroidTM phone that enables you to record GPS tracks and view live statistics – such as time, speed, distance, and elevation – while hiking, biking, running or participating in other outdoor activities. Once recorded, you can share your tracks, upload them to Google Spreadsheets and visualize them on Google My Maps.
