Android phones, apps and tablets

  • I was talking about memory usage rather than battery- I've resigned myself to the sad reality if Android being shit when it comes to battery life.

  • I was up to 6 & 1/2 days on my Incredible S last week, with the bar still green, and only charged it because I was planning on a long ride with GPS blah.

The sad reality is user error. I mean that in the nicest possible way of course.

  • you running 4.0?

So far it's been super smooth / crash free for me (official build)

No damn you htc! Does anyone know the release date for sense 3.5 is so that I can finally upgrade to icecreamsandwich?

Depends on what you term "use" I imagine, the published standby time for your Incredible S is around the 15 day mark- I imagine that this is with all radios turned off, screen inactive etc. Published talktime is six and a half hours.

So in theory you could use it for an hour a day and it would last you your six and a half days.

That's viable only if you turn off all the radios, screen etc at the end of your hours use- but you may well do this.

The Huawei Blaze wades into battle with 12 and a half days standby, and four hours of talktime, so you are ahead already due to your larger battery and more efficient screen.

My experience of the Blaze is that if it comes off the charger at ~7am if will need to go back on at ~2pm, so seven hours, which is fairly credible if you look at the four hour usage prediction- although of course it's not in constant use.

So it's performing according to it's makers specifications, and I should stop complaining really.

The iPhone which I have gave back to my now ex place of work this morning would last until midnight, despite being given a damn good using all day, which is what puts the Android handsets I have had and have into contrast when it comes to battery life.

    tldr.

I would like the battery to last longer, without having to follow a BMMF usage model.

  • Motorola, having been hugely embarrassed by the extremely poor battery life of their flagship Droid RAZR, have remedied the problem by rushing out the same phone, with a much bigger battery, called the Droid RAZR MAXX. Its talktime and general battery performance have topped the charts.

  • They are claimed times I take it though?

  • just signed into chrome on my phone and it syncs pages with the laptop, that's pretty fucking cool

  • Been doing that With Firefox Mobile Beta (Fennec) before I got ICS, now I just use the default browser.

  • I would like the battery to last longer, without having to follow a BMMF usage model.

Hypothetical BMMF usage model. I have the screen on full brightness all the time, and no auto-sleeping, because that's just common sense when it's in my pocket, or I'm busy doing something where I don't want to be/shouldn't be disturbed, or I'm asleep. GPS and wi-fi and mobile data are on at all times, because you just can't have too much of a good thing, and I have to log all my walking around the UCL campus on Strava, or else my VO2 Max will surely decline.

  • Can you run a custom rom on a blaze? At least then you could disable most of the stuff you don't use. Just a thought.

I'll re-flash cm7 on my wildfire when I get a chance to get rid of my shite and see how that goes with the apps you've said you're using. If its any better, which I highly doubt, you're welcome to have it on long term loan with the only proviso that I can have it back if I brick my sgs 2.

  • That's most kind, I'll happily take you up on that.

If anyone who is good with this sort of thing wants to wipe my Blaze and install a minimal, cruft free version of Android with a handful of essential applications then I'd be very interested also.

  • Please could someone advise me which android I should go for next, I currently have a Desire S which I really like - I like the size and useability of it. Ideally I would like a phone with a better camera, better battery life would be good too. I use the phone as an MP3 player so a phone with decent sound would be good - was thinking maybe one of the htc beats phones?

  • I have a young friend that has recently got the **HTC Sensation XE **(Beats phone), and has never regretted anything so much. It overheats so badly, that he can't play 3D games on it, and it can almost be too hot to touch when charging. I can only recommend what not to get, and its the phone I've just mentioned.

  • I'll take that one off the list then...

  • I have a young friend

  • My EX's son,.....as he ignored my advice to get the Galaxy S II.

Cunt! You almost made me spill my coffee!!

    Perv. :)

  • Aye, not been on this thread for a while so just read through the current page... Funnily enough just been looking at the Galaxy S2, if the beats is out of the question. What had put me off is my friend has a galaxy, looking at the range must be the Ace. Felt plasticky, worked slow, battery life is terrible and didn't like the interface when I tried it... the S2 is good then? not a bit big for the pocket? I'll have a look back for your post.

I have the xl with beats audio and I love it apart from the whole htc sense 3.0 not being able to get the latest version of android thing. Had no problemss with overheating and the audio is good.

  • get an s2, or even better, a galaxy nexus

  • fyi, my sgs2 broke after 36 days. got the 'car mode problem'. apparently it's extremely common and is more a question of 'when' it happens rather than 'if'. it has been sent off to samsung to be repaired and i have been left with some nokia brick from 1927.

  • nexus then

  • it was an awesome phone till it broke, but i wish i'd gotten something else now.

Mine exactly the same, iPhone last noticeably longer than the HTC Desire S, in fact I remember running my iPhone for two days with minimal usage, whether the HTC desperately need a charge before the day is out.

Sorry Ed, but that's bollocks. I had a Desire S, albeit briefly, and used to get 2 days with moderate useage. Admittedly, I'd dicked about with all the settings for apps, but nothing out of the ordinary.

My Mrs is one of those pains in the arse with her Desire S permanently attached to the left side of her head and even she gets 2 days.

Genuine question, if you don't use your phone for work, what the hell does everyone do with them during the day to get such shit battery life? Gamers are excluded for obvious reasons.

  • In order:

    Gmail
    Texting
    Web access
    G-maps
    Phone
    eBay app

Yesterday I caught the train into London Bridge, so used the browser and answered email for ~10 minutes.

I then checked it periodically during the day for email, and used the maps application once to find a meeting.

I sent and received ~20 or so texts, and made three phone calls.

    It was dead by 2pm.
