  • foxy boy, it's currently being discussed in the kindle topic.

  • Hmm, it's not really a kindle per se though, it's an Android tablet. Or it definitely will be when someone has rooted it.

  • No apps, no e ink. Worst of both worlds. If it gets hacked, then I'm interested.

  • First impressions of the official Flickr app are good.

Load of features and a clever Ui

  • No SD card on the Fire. Could be a down point.

  • Either way, it might not please demanding Android techie types like you lot, but a half decent Android based tablet for £130 with true cloud connectivity and the content Amazon can offer is compelling.

You might not think so, but Amazon are firing for Apple here. Apple's model relies on making extremely desirable but expensive hardware which consumers bankrupt themselves to buy. The temptation to save £270 odd and buy this instead is going to be great. I think they'll sell like hotcakes. I'm buying one, hacked or not. It would have to be pretty rubbish for me not to at £130...

  • people who want an ipad will buy one. people who want a cheap tablet to have on the arm of the sofa with the tv guide and facebook open will buy a cheap tablet running whatever has facebook/internet on.
more choice for the consumer is a good thing. apple are not interested in catering for the £150 tablet market as all that means is a bigger inventory but less margins, that's not their business model it's amstrads and look what happened to them.

anyone who's bankrupting themselves to buy an ipad needs to reassess their fiscal priorities.

  • Desire is the root cause of unhappiness. Ironic really, I could never get my Desire rooted......

  • I'm surprised nobody's discussed this further. £130! Ok it's only got a 7" screen, but it's IPS, there's a dual core processor, 8Gb internal storage. And it's only £130!

Where did you get the £130 from? No UK price has been mentioned yet, it more likely to be around the £169 - £199 price bracket.

  • It's $199 so it will be £199 minimum - thieving bastards

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to share a WiFi connection via android?

Will be on the move next month and have paid for wifi access for one device, but obviously it would be nice if that could be turned into a hotspot to connect lots of devices too.

    Ideas?

  • Not sure. I know you can use your android as a hot spot though, is that what you mean?

Yes, but pretty sure you can't share a WiFi connection, only a mobile connection. Hence my asking if anyone new any tricks

  • Don't use your phone as the wifi device. a laptop running windows or Linux, not sure about OS x, will be able to share the wifi joy. I think.

  • You need a mobile hotspot

Still needs to be a non Wi-Fi connection.

So in theory I can connect with my phone, teather that via USB to my Powerbook and then share that connection over Wi-Fi. Heaven knows if it will be useable IRL, we shall see

  • Or ditch the icrap :P

if you tether to the laptop via usb you might be able to share your internet connection via wireless on the laptop. i know i can do both independently with my "i-crap" devices but never tried both at the same time.

but then why can't you just turn your phone into a wireless hotspot? or doesn't it support that?

    ? (Using HTC Hero)

but then why can't you just turn your phone into a wireless hotspot? or doesn't it support that?

Because I want to share a single Wi-Fi connection with multiple devices. Can't connect to Wi-Fi and share via Wi-Fi at the same time. As stated in o.p.

  • ah i thought you had some kind of european 3g roaming sim

  • I'm just playing with a Motorola Xoom, fuck it's nice. Very lush.

Android works so much better on a tablet than iOS does. I had returned my iPad, it was largely useless to me. But this tablet is really really nice and finally the responsiveness of things like map is better than the iPad experience but with the full richness of Google Maps.

Going to have to get one.

Did you get this in the end? Seen these reduced and wondered if worth a punt?

Meant your apple product... the powerbook?

My friend got one as his main work device. He loves it.
