i'm having a problem with my dhd, a few weeks ago i took it back to craphone warehouse to fix because the screen didn't switch off when making a call, and the screen kept switching it's self on. they took 3 weeks to fix it, well the proximity sensor thingy, it's still randomly switching the screen on, fairly oftern....
the apps i have installed are
angry birds, 3g watchdog, stupid zombies, facebook reckless racing, poweramp, last fm tweetdeck, isyncr, i factory restored it when i got it back, and it's raping the battery.any one got any ideas?

^try a blackberry...
I had one of these. It was a bit shit.
Battery life was great since the phone doesn't do much.
I assume the new ones have actual features? -

the sensor works fine now, apparantly they replaced the gps sponge or something like that??? anyways i think it was a calendar sync issue, i deselected the connect to pc sync option, and touch wood it's behaving it'self...

Hippy, apps are shite, but it does everything I wanted my Android to do and battery lasts 3 days!
its also fast! I have a torch fwiw. no angry birds tho :..(
i love the email and it actually works as a phone, unlike my DHD which would not make calls when I was most in need (adult party line...)
I still love Andorid tho, and really miss the navigation software when I'm travelling with work...

I got 2 days out of the DHD if I turned off most stuff. I use Gmail and apparently that's shit on BB? What part of the phone didn't work for you? I don't make many calls compared to some but it works. it was always the iPhone I had trouble with re: calls. I'd love for some of the big players to throw some (more?) money into new battery tech though. I know they're working on making componentry more power efficient (I've seen the test circuit boards that allows power metering on all the bits and pieces).

Blackberrys will have the QNX OS from halfway through next year, and will be able to run Android apps. Till then, I don't think Blackberrys have much to offer. I have one, and I love it for texting, but funnily enough, I use my Android phone now for emails.....and I never thought that would happen.

Couldn't agree with you more here. The day I can have a phone like a HTC Desire with with a 3-5 day battery I'd keep it for years.

The key to blackberry battery life is that the emails come over standard gsm , using the blackberry network. No data connection needed, so much better battery life. It's neat, but takes proprietary infrastructure.

I could never have a Blackberry as my personal phone, it would remind me of being at work all the time - they are fucking awful, all they have going for them is push/pull for Exchange mail, and battery life.

anyway this is the 'droid thread... so apologies for derailing.

Thanks for that I've always wondered why BB's have such good battery life. Do all the touch screen batteries still have the great battery life then?
I really do love Android as a platform, would never buy an iPhone and the only thing which appeals to me about BB is the battery life.

They'd be better off making their software more efficient.

I sit in front of a computer all day so I don't need my phone syncing with emails. So, when I'm in the office I just turn off sync. I do tend to leave it connected to wifi all the time though which is a bit pointless.

#stillbitterandtwistedIt's not the software that uses the most power. It's the huge bright screens.
So, either make more efficient screens or better batteries. The software-related power use on my phone is bugger all since it sits there doing nothing most of the time. -

Anyone else getting dropped wi-fi when further away from the router with 2.3? I upgraded my Desire the other day and I'm very happy with the upgrade generally, but it drops the wi-fi signal (then lets me reconnect) when I'm in bed (i.e. furthest away from the router).
Install [WiFi Analyzer ]('https://market.android.com/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en') and measure signal strength. If it's below -80 dBm your access point is not positioned correctly.

Android is CPU hungry and CPU will always be the culprit when it comes to battery usage.
I am not sure about the latest Blackberry models but about 5-6 month ago all had under 600-800Mhz CPUs.
I have Android Froyo (2.2) running on ~600Mhz CPU tablet and it's sluggish but the battery life is superb. All of the latest Android phones have over 1Ghz CPUs, some dual-core, including my Nexus S which lasts for a day and a half.
So even when taking screen power usage out of equation Android phones will always be more battery hungry.Andy is right, Android is not designed with CPU/power usage efficiency in mind, you have a Linux kernel and Java VM on top.
but it is a great open (relatively) platform for easy development of apps which is of a great benefit to end users and to Google and it's also attractive to manufactures so everyone wins.Google have driven mobile hardware technology to progress immensely in the last two years which again benefits end users. But battery technology is yet to progress.
I was lucky enough to pick up HP Touchpad for £90 the other week and I am very impressed with Palm WebOS, the architecture is simple and you have a very efficient UI, based on HTML/JavaScript, that runs on top of Linux Kernel and X Server. Since there is no Java nonsense the CPU usage is efficient and the battery life is great. Unfortunately marketing/money rule and WebOS did not survive. Just like Symbian :)

You managed to get the £90 HP?!?! Damn lucky bastard!!! I tried for days on either side and still missed it :-(

From Staples over the phone. I placed an order online on time but as most of online shops they were DOSed and my order did not go through. I called them to complain and managed to order one from reserve stock. I also had one on order from Amazon but they run out of stock and had to cancel the order.

Dual-core cpu makes for a great paperweight :)
Lilly girl.
I went to O2 to pay for a repair, I tried the Galaxy S II, it was awesome, also the Sensation too.
In the end - choose which UI and feel you liked the best, I'm guessing you went for the Sensation because you liked how it is.
