  • Probably been asked before, so apologies, UTFS'ing didnt help.

just got a Sony Experia Z3. Phones great except I can hardly hear anything through my headphones. They are westone UM2, so dual driven balanced armature monitors, they should be plenty loud enough. Nowhere in any review I read (until I searched for z3 too quiet just now) did this come up as an issue, but it's almost unusable as it is. Any advise from fellow sufferers? My hearing is quite bad from working around noisey things, but wifey says that it's too quiet, and compared to her iphone it's shite, so not just me....

  • I think it probably has an EU volume limit. Often can't be removed without rooting but I'm not sure about the Z3.

Ran into more problems with CM11 on Nexus 5. For some reason some programs are unable to write to the SD card. In particular this means that Chrome can't download files, the camera doesn't work (can't save the file) and trying tou use gallery or quickpic to view images doesn't work as it can't access the SD.

Tried a few of the solutions online but they didn't work. Trying to find a better way to back stuff up before I move on to installing nightlies (I'm on the RC). Biggest annoyance is I was using CM11 before and this didn't happen.

  • Updating to CM12 nightlies didn't fix the error. Tried to install stock 4.4 and am now stuck in a bootloop. Really fucking bored of these stupid problems now.

  • are you using ADB? Do you have fastboot?
I'm here to save you, but you have to reply in <10 minutes.

  • @aggi
    I'm going to sleep.
    Follow this guide:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701

Tip number one: Abandon your data. You should have backed your contacts up to google or to a file somewhere manually. Retrieve clean apps from the Play store. From now on when you set your phone up, choose the option "back up my data and shit to google servers". when you re-set up your phone you can restore all that crap via google. If you're really that spiced about picking through some settings after flashing a rom, you shouldn't be flashing roms.

Tip number two: I recommend method #2 on that site. when you unpackage the factory image you have to unpackage the zips within the zip as well. you should be left with only these files after deleting the extra crap .sh scripts and .txt crap:

    bootloader.img
    radio.img
    system.img
    userdata.img
    boot.img
    Cache.img
    recovery.img

TIP3. Because i'm feeling kind, i took a screen shot of my "rescue stock" folder. yours should look the same. see below. Ignore the dates. It's something humorous Google does on purpose, i think.

  • 5.1.1 is looking good, the lag is noticeably better. I used to have to close every app before starting a new one to make even vaguely workable.

  • Speaker boost has resolved the issue. Fucking stupid for a premium phone to he so quite out the box and require a third party app to make it usable. Rant over.

  • Cheers, I'd gone to bed (got bored of waiting for another image to download) and will pick it back up tonight. I have ADB/fastboot and can boot into recovery so I don't think it's terminal.

I was getting issues with clean installs before attempting to restore any form of backups which is the strange thing. I haven't tried unzipping images and deleting extra crap from those so will give that a try next.

    Thanks

  • i would quite like a small smartphone. I like the price of the moto e. this does not look small.
I am used to a talky stick. Please advise.

  • Is size or price your key requirement? If the latter, Moto G. The size will become a non-issue in a couple of days. You'll end up liking it. If the former, dunno.

  • Moto G was what I keep coming back to.
    I am scared of slabs.

  • But it's full of stars?

  • If you use your phone for more than just talking on you'll like it and wonder how you managed before. The Moto G isn't big by today's standards so if you're afraid of looking like an idiot (as I was when I first got my Note 2), you won't.

  • I don't use my phone for anything other than talking

  • I take back what I said about the battery life on CM12, it's improved a lot, still not as good as when I first got the phone, which is only about 7 months, but I can now go back to charging the phone just once a day.

  • Fuck that.
I had something like that before. The 515. Was nice.

A camera and grindr is all I'm after.

  • 2 of my kids have moto E's which are fine for them and they are about the same size as you, Damo.

  • The kids or the phone?

  • So, after a lot more cursing, the issue seemed to be installing different roms using Nexus Root Toolkit. Installing by copying the rom across and booting manually to recovery seemed to work.

  • @chalfie get Moto G. Seriously. Easiest piece of advice I've ever given, since I last saw your mum, etc etc blah blah

  • Ok. I'm impressed with 5.1.1, it has solved the lag with the 2012 N7 considerably. What's left is probably due to old hardware.

I do have a 2013 N7 as well but I cracked the glass. The screen and touch bit seem ok but it's a bugger to find an 'official' replacement part for it.

    Any ideas?

  • The screen has gone on my iPhone 4s, and as I like my nexus 7 I'm looking to replace it with an Android phone.

Any advice on where to start looking?

    My use is pretty average and I probably won't ever use a smartphone to its fullest. The main things I use are;

    • camera
    • browser
    • Google docs
    • music

    Other wants:

    • decent memory
    • reasonable battery life (ie will go a full day of use)
    • not insanely big

It would need to be better than my 4s to make it worth not just replacing the screen again. I was wondering about the Xperia Z1 Compact as it's a bit smaller. I tend to have a rule about not buying Sony products, but the Sony Ericsson I used to have were faultless.

    Cheers

  • If you want a decent camera, I recon that might be your best bet. Sony have got a lot better than they used to be, but its still not stock android like your Nexus 7. Other forum favorite is the Motorola Moto G (4G), which is nice, not too pricey at all, and a good size. But only has an average camera, and probably quite a bit worse than the iPhone (maybe)
