Android phones, apps and tablets

  • I really noticed that. Loading a webpage took forever. I'm on EE which is usually fine in built up areas but Canary Wharf is for all intents and purposes, a massive Faraday Cage.

  • Or the illuminati / gchq / aliens.

  • moto x

i like the nexus 5, but i'd like something sleeker... so moto x is probably my next phone.... but may go with iPhone for the first time in 6 years, just because i can and my contract allows me to upgrade whenever i like as long as i've paid off half the phone... which is fairly easy to do quickly without really noticing it.

i'm interested in the "hand off" feature and syncing with my macbook

  • The handoff feature is just Chrome Sync, no?

Access open tabs, sessions, etc from other instances of Chrome on other browsers.

And is the sync more than what Drive/Docs offers?

I don't find there are any rough edges moving between Android and anything else (mostly a mix of Linux, Windows and Mac machines).

Actually, about the only rough edge is moving from an Android phone app to an Android tablet app... there's nothing that sorts that out if it doesn't rely on saving stuff back to a server somewhere. But Apple aren't yet offering that either are they (though their sync API at least allows devs to start building that missing bit)?

  • I do this on Google play for tube etc - but invariably I want to listen to other things at other times and GiffGaff's reception is so patchy that I am rarely able to stream anything.

  • Looks interesting. How long have you had it? Durable?

  • Its not as smooth.

And I really really like that you can text from your phone number through the computer with an apple set up. And take incoming calls. That's slick.

  • I've had it since Christmas. Bought it for hiking in Snowdonia, got through 5 days of that in (mostly) pouring rain, all the wet riding I've done this year, plus more hiking and camping etc.
I'm not kind to things like this and it's still pretty much mint condition.

  • I've been using the same ziplock for 5 years or some shit now. The bottom is gone so I just leave it zipped and drop the phone in the other end, then fold :)
It's going to tear soon so maybe I could use this as a replacement.

  • Pushbullet has some of the same style of hand off features. Texts, notifications, etc appear on your computer screen if your browser with the add-in is open. I think you can also reply with another app (I haven't looked at that yet).

  • Yeah. Comes recommended. I was using ziplocks or just sandwich bags before. The top of this one takes up a bit more room, but in terms of peace of mind while you're getting drenched, it's the best thing I've found.

  • Will it fit an N5?

  • That's what I have. So, yes.

I bought mine from the camping bit of Sports Direct.

  • I see Sports Direct selling them on ebay for £8.50

  • OnePlus don't mess about with shipping do they, ordered the phone friday, shipping notification arrived at 3am this morning, phone in my hand by 2pm.

It's now charging, prior to me booting it up, and running though all of the upgrades.

  • Whats my best option for a simple mail app on android? I am.using k9 but it doesn't filter any spam.
I'm considering just using the Gmail one.
I am not very technically minded.
Also I assume any secure mail client will need both parties to work properly?
Finally is there a way to move the keyboard round a bit as I am always hitting the full stop button.

  • I'm a bit lost on how to order one of these (when does the phone arrive if you pre order it in a few days time), however, if invites are still a thing and you happen to have a spare one going....

  • I use the default email app for my work account, which is a microsoft exchange account. Also, the gmail app for my gmail account.

I'd try swiftkey if you haven't already. I get on a lot better with that compared with the normal keyboard.

  • Turns out the HTC One is waterproof. Dropped mine, fully submerged, into a basin of water for 2-3 seconds and its 100% ok. Its about bloody time, phone makers.

  • Hmm. How long since you did it?

A lot of phones will work after being submerged in water, but you should turn it off, dismantle it as much as possible and pop it in a bag of rice in a warm place for 48 hours. If there is water internally and it's on that can be terminal as it shorts out the circuits.

  • ^ yeah. This. You are probably living on borrowed time.

  • I think I paid less in store. Can't really remember though.

  • It was early ours of Tuesday, was trying to feed my 8 week old and read the news at same time. It fell into the bottle warmer

  • Anyone got an invite to Goggle Inbox going spare? Interested to have a look....

  • Pre-orders open on Monday for one hour (15.00 to 16.00 GMT I think, but you can get it all setup now at http://preorder.oneplus.net/) and will ship as they have stock as I understand it.

If you have an invite (none have been given out over the last week, I may have spares when I get them, but can't promise anything) you will be able to go to the front of the queue, and get your pre-order dispatched straight away, rather than on the dispatch date given in your pre-order.

I've been playing with mine over the last couple of days, it's now far closer to how I like it, and can confirm that I love it.
