Secure phone.

Considering it runs Android, how private and secure is it going to be?

The idea is that it's open source so if the code is out there, it can be audited by 'us'. Google closed-source apps do not allow 'us' to see what their code is doing.

HTC One or LG G2?

S5.
I may be wrong on some details but this is my impression.
Being water resistant is great for me. There have been many times where I do sports that involve water such as kayaking, canyoning, and jumping in to a river off a cliff etc... but never got to take pictures/videos. Heck getting soaked on a bicycle isnt so worrying now. Now I can sort of if I don't jump into it for too long anyway. Being dust proof is also good, sometimes dust can get onto your screen which is annoying.
The screen is using smart technology to be the best for optimum viewing. That's great and since it is already 1080p and had 440 odd PPI, it's going to be even better on a 5.1 Inch screen. People look at it only being 1080P, but if it went 4K, then battery life will go down. More pixels and size means more power consumption. There's a reason why some have stayed small and kept the pixels low, to their detriment of course. 440 PPI is about the best the eye can see below 8 inches from my memory.
Finger print technology isn't great, but even with it's flaws it is better than not having it. The option is there.
2800 Mah battery is nice, I am a fan of larger capacity. Removable battery means you can upgrade to more too.
Autofocus is 0.3 so the World's fastest. This is handy for people who like to take photos quickly.
Some functions such as depth of field mode will allow funky photos as well as the standard of fish eye, filters etc... in built.
4K video recording is cool. One day there will be 4k TV's as standard. The camera is already decent on the S4 with slow mo, and other features.
128 Gig SD card slot means you can have a lot of storage.
New power save mode to turn things black and white, as well as closing unnecessary features.
The phone has better connectivity, so 4G network will be better since it will be more compatible with other networks (If they start to share etc...) Connection to Wifi apparently will be faster too. Download speeds is something they seem to think will see a huge boost.
S Health with heart rate monitor, temp, humidity sensors seems good. People who do sports may enjoy it more.

That's very nice and all but it's neither of the two handsets I asked about.

Unless S5 is another name for one of them and you're being deliberately esoteric.

S5 is this year's Samsung Galaxy S5.
Get a Nexus 5 off-contract and a sim-only contract.

I'm after a new smartphone on which to renew my EE contract. Requirements are: cheap, small (for a smartphone), good battery life. I've currently got an HTC desire S and I've been fairly happy with that.
Recommendations please!

N5 or Moto G, there are no other alternatives IMHO...

Sorry my post was a general one and not specific to you Stevo. My bad.
Samsung had an event yesterday that's why I posted it.

HTC one has good loud speakers. Good night time camera.
LG -g2 if you prefer a great day time camera. It also happens to be fast on benchmarks too.

I like the sound of the xperia z1 compact.

Most importantly, will the N5 fit into the case Murtle made for my HTC One-X?

Cheers TS. Was that reply for me? They both look like good phones, but neither really qualify as small. For reference, my surrent phone is about 12cm x 6cm with a 95mm (3.75") display. Something with a similar footprint would be good.

Says pre-order.
Same 16GB White, £229 at Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_5_white_16gb
There's probably £10 express postage on top of that, but Google claim to have it in stock.

AlpacaDecathlon out of fucking nowhere, have a slightly ruggedised Android phone for £200 with a 3500 mah battery (not 6000, thats the spec for the tablet they are doing) -

Not sure what you're reading about KK on N4.
It had some teething problems when it was first rolled out, I think, but that was ages ago. Have it on mine and no issues to report. Also lol at wanting to charge £15 for a micro sim. Do they even scissors ?!
Thanks for that, I've been waiting worried about upgrading! There are stories all over the net of battery death, assorted glitches etc, and none saying it was officially "fixed" - although obviously once something's posted it's there forever and people don't often care so much about positive news. I shall pull the trigger.
Re sim - the reason I didn't even scissors is for some silly reason their sims are machined with overly large gold contacts so there'd be little to no clearance, so it is a totally different SIM (not sure if they just give everyone new it now - comes with a normal sized adapter). 15 quid a joke.

This is what my girlfriend was/is looking for, but there's nothing much that fits the bill:
Samsung, and others, make "mini" or teen oriented ones that are that size but seriously limited on spec, especially with the samsungs where you pay for the price.
All the "proper" phones are huge - I just bought an N4 and found that big. Girlfriend's going for a Motog just because you can't justify spending more and getting less.
The only thing I found that sort of worked was Xperia M - seemed snappy enough and functional in store, nice to hold, 3.5" size....
tried route follwing, visuallyit works well, audio prompts for upcoming waypoint, but no direction and didn't work over bluetooth....oh well can't have everything....
Now need a decent bar mount, anyone got ideas? then find an app to tap screen to turn display on, tried a couple, didn't work too well.
