  • what's wrong with SonyEricsson?

  • I know it's a bit of an alien concept for you, Neil, but be patient... They become available quite regularly, you just have to keep checking...

  • i've got tulip bulbs and bitcoins available if that's any help...

  • Somewhat incredibly, I have another LG G2 for sale.

16gb, black, locked to EE, totally cracked and fucked touchscreen.

    Approx cost of fixing £120.

Go on, make me an offer.

    Balls.

  • Tesco are out of stock, seemingly permanently.

I've seen tales on t'internet* that their stores in meatspace often have stock when the website doesn't.

    *so it must be true.

  • ^^ $5.

you have to keep checking, their email alert didn't work for me. got mine for £109 after a discount when they lost the first order.

  • Is it better to find a used N4 or go for a Moto G? Friend has too many problems with his One X (sim card not reading, signal issues, overheating, regularly crashing and rebooting) and wants to buy something unlocked.

    Full spec comparison:
    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5048&idPhone2=5831

    Key stuff:
N4 has a higher spec chip:
    N4: Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon, Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait CPU, Adreno 320 GPU
    G: Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU, Adreno 305 GPU
    **N4 has 2GB RAM, G only has 1GB[b]
N4 will do Dual Carrier HSDPA, so max speed 42 instead of 21 Mbps
Both can be a wifi hotspot and will do Wifi a,b,g,n (not ac), but N4 has 2 wifi antennas, so for 802.11n wifi it can theoretically do 300Mbps vs G's 150Mbps.
    G can receive FM radio, N4 can't.

[b]Everything else, in order of my estimate of importance:**
Both have Bluetooth 4 with Audio support, but the G supports BT4's Low Energy mode, which can be handy if you use devices like HRMs, pedometers etc.
    G has Corning Gorilla Glass 3, N4 has CGG2
N4 has an extra HSDPA band at 1700
N4's stock OS should support DLNA media streaming.
Both have USB2, but N4 uses SlimPort (one way of getting HD video from a phone to a screen, MHL is the more common way), and G claims USB Host support.
N4 camera outputs 8MP, G camera outputs 5MP. Both are shit.
    N4 can capture 1080p, G captures 720p. Both @30fps, probably equally shit.
    N4 has NFC, G doesn't.

    TLDR:
G will be noticably slower, mostly because of the RAM, but its 2070 MAh battery will last longer than the N4's 2100MAh, especially if the N4 battery is 1 year old. Neither battery is removable.
A new G will be easier to replace on warranty if something goes wrong without a dramatic event.

Keep checking, was back in stock last week and I was lucky enough to pick one up for £99. New customer £10 discount no longer works.

    Otherwise it's £119 PAYG from Phones 4U + £1.99 unlock via Ebay

Amazing, thank you for saving me some Googling.

So... who has an N4 for sale?

  • I wouldn't say the moto g is 'noticeably slower' for normal use, they're both plenty fast enough from what i've seen

  • I wouldn't say the moto g is 'noticeably slower' for normal use

Multitask more, your test wasn't valid.

    Subjective.

  • your right, ones numbers are bigger than the other, well done

  • Subjective.

I always thought the act of noticing was also subjective.

Benchmarks I've seen have shown the G and N4 are comparable. Reviews are also not conclusive for one over the other. I'd just buy whatever is easiest/cheapest. A new Moto G vs a used N4 at the same price is a toss up for me. (subjective)

If you need super performance computing power, the obvious answer is neither.

  • What would you guys buy if your main aims were:

    • andriod smartphone
    • as close to £100 as possible (but c.£150 is ok as is 2nd hand)
    • at least a c.4.7" screen

    GO!

  • Can anyone recommend an app for splitting costs, keeping track of expenditure (ie in a flatshare/ between a couple) that works on android? Splitwise is apparently vg on iphones but crashes all the time on my HTC

  • Do you have google drive?

It can be a bit clunky on an iphone, but at least then you can all access it from a PC as well.

  • Having just replaced a Nexus 4 with a moto G, I'd say the G is just as good. (note not power user)

  • nope

    moto g

  • That was my initial though but I was looking for something with a slightly bigger screen. What with the Nexus 5 being out I thought the Nexus 4 would be a good option.

Are there any samsungs galaxy's worth a look? The Note and Siii seem to hold quite a high resale value on ebay.

  • tesco 16gb moto g is back in stock

  • and gone again

  • I just ordered an 8Gb one, picking it up tomorrow.
