Android phones, apps and tablets

  • Just unlocked and rooted my Nexus 5 using the Nexus Root Toolkit. Pretty easy but had the usual issues installing the drivers (possibly as Windows 8 doesn't like unsigned drivers) but the instructions lead you through it pretty well.

One thing to note though, the recommended backup settings don't back up system settings, launcher layout, stock app settings, etc which is a bit unfortunate if you've spent some time making the phone work how you want it.

  • Don't use the Android built-in Backup

    1. As you've found out it stores fuck all so is basically pointless.
    2. It stores your passwords in plaintext back at Google HQ.
  • Does it really do 2?

  • I has lte on ee with 4gb cap and double (!?!) speed downloads. The contract is 2yrs and is subsidising an 8gb lg g2. £30 pcm.

  • Does it really do 2?

    Yep.

  • Does it really do 2?

No, I just make that up to scare people.

Yes, of course it does. How else could it connect to your wifi after a full wipe?

  • Having had to factory reset my phone a bunch of times recently (warranty) I'm pretty swift now with setting all the big brother options off. G+, Google backup, etc.

  • Also, have a look at titanium backup if you are romming.

This is aimed at snotty, not the knowledgeable Aussie tosser.

  • This was using the backup utility on the Nexus Toolkit. I think it pulls it via adb and stores locally on your hdd.

It seems to save the settings of the apps it did back up ok though.

  • I've used titanium backup since before it was cool, just wasn't aware Google backup did that.

I toss for the Queen now, tally ho!

They'd have to come to the 19th floor of a tower block on a council estate to make use of it.

Seems a bit paranoid even for my liking.

As my Androids only need internet rather than intranet, it's not like they could even access anything. Guest networks FTW.

Not the point though is it. Every Android device with backup enabled is sending plaintext back to Google from every wifi point they've connected to.
Is it transmitted plaintext? Stored plaintext? Then there's NSA/GCHQ with its little Google syphon capturing it all..

You're also forgetting that people are generally very shit with passwords. Have their wifi password and I bet you'd do pretty damn well to grabbing a few other passwords.

  • Definitely not the point... but I can do stuff about my information security and I can't do jack about anyone else's (expect educate people online). So as long as I'm OK, it's cool enough... I don't sweat it too much.

  • "except educate people online" which is what I'm doing by letting them know they are sending a bunch of information to Google they might not want to.

  • Now i'm starting to understand why 'giff gaff is a bit shite' even tho its cheaper and has better network coverage.

If it works for you, great. Well done. Giffgaff was fucking shit for me.
Recurring goodybags which failed and used up my credit. No customer support. Less than 10kb/s connection speeds despite H+ connection. Being called a liar for blaming them (rightly) and not my bank. "better coverage" only in certain parts of the city, not out in the suburbs and the proper countryside.

You get what you pay for, O2's offcuts is what it feels like.

  • Three costs different amounts depending on if you're PAYG, 1 month rolling contract, or 12 month contract.

Their best sim only tariff is on a par with giffgaff but you have to sign up for a 12 month contract.

    ?

I'm paying £12.90 a month now, rolling, and have exactly the same things as on GiffGaff for £12.50 (ULTD Texts/Internet and 250min). And as a bonus for my extra 40p a month I get some semblance of customer service.

The £15/m for a year is better than GG, as it includes unlimited tethering which GG doesn't. And all of these support 4G which IIRC GG don't

  • Sorry, you're right.

    Thanks for that...

  • Yep.

Tomato. Sometimes BBQ, sweet chilli, chilli, hoisin. It all depends.
