  • Thanks for the input on the Nexus 4 - I've ordered my giffgaff sim & will order the phone tonight.

  • Live google event - Nexus 7 and also talking about what's new in 4.3

^^ I cancelled my longstanding Orange contract about a month ago and went with the Nexus 4/GiffGaff option. I really can't recommend both of these highly enough.

I seem to get better coverage than I did with Orange and the Nexus hardware is seriously good for the money. The missus is now going to get rid of the iPhone and the T-Mobile contract and follow suit.

i've got a Giff Gaff SIM as well, intending to sign-up to the £10/m PAYG deal (featuring 1GB of data).. surely the internet can only be faster than Orange (which i've always found to be pretty sluggish)..

    • an accquaintance reckoned O2 compressing images (or something like it) was a 'deal killer'; seems a little over-blown to me, any issues to be aware of?!

ps. can somebody join me in a Fairphone purchase so that we can compare notes on it (hopefully they'll get it out this year in some ethical form or another!)

Latest Cyanogen got stuck on the boot screen for me too, so I re-flashed the previous one. Didn't lose anything though, maybe due to a different partition layout?

depsite spenidng a few hours of a holiday trying to place Cyanogen onto my Nexus 7 - didn't quite manage it (!) - half-pint bought at Norths Birthday (this Tues) for the clearest foolproof and quickest-to-implement method / instructions?!

  • I'm not London-based but for both my GalaxyS and GalaxyS III, I applied a rooted kernel and bootloader by ChainFire using Odin (Samsung specific). That included Koush's ClockworkMod boot loader, which I use to flash CyanogenMod nightly builds.

I've got CM9 on my HP Touchpad too, but that was already running Android alongside its standard OS when I bought it off eBay.

Should be instructions for CM10 on N7 in the N7 bit of XDA-developers forum?

  • Almost definitely going to buy the new N7. And probably the new nexus phone whenever it comes out. I like the iPhone 5 ok, but all my stuff is invested in the Google world

  • Beware, I bricked my n7 when attempting to replace the boot loader. Could have fixed it by doing a massive pain in the butt reinstall of windows, since the issue was in the android drivers on that side. Rang Google and got a replacement instead.

Take away lesson: get your connection to the fastboot node working before doing any other crazy shit.

  • Ok the new chrome cast dongle looks absolutely awesome

Completely impressed with this. Want one now!

  • Ill be buying one for my dad and mrs spenceeys dad. They've been talking about getting the tablet on the tv for ages.

  • They do look interesting :) and $35?? Nice!

  • I'd be all over it if I had a TV. Pity theres not phone/tablet to pc/mac functionality, I could definitely see myself using that, leaving my laptop tethered to the big display and speakers more often.

  • Well if your pc has an hdmi port I can't see why it wouldn't work...

  • It does not. I'm sure there are many ways I could set that up anyway, I'm just far too lazy to investigate it.

  • See I dunno if I would buy it. I fired up Netflix on my iPhone just to see what was on. Hit play on a movie and it asked did I want to display on my iPhone or my Samsung tv. I had not set anything up, was surprised.

I've seen it before with Samsung, my S3 + TV work great together, but was very surprised to see this functionality in Netflix across platforms (tested on PC, same thing).

Catch: My TV is a "smart" TV and has Google apps on it (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu etc... etc... ) So basically it's a TV with a pc inside it (that is upgradable from dual core, to quad core... more memory etc...). This is the TV : http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN46ES8000FXZA and no, I paid $1300 for it, not the insane retail price. Oh and I do use Skype on it, pretty handy

I guess if you still using an old TV it's an option and Google are aiming to take on AppleTV rather than Samsung.

  • Tweetdeck finally died on my S3 at about 5.15 today. Sniffle :(

  • I hate to say it, but the standard twitter app on iPhone is nice.

Irony, I think Gmail on iPhone is better than the same Gmail app on my S3. Dunno, just feels better.

Does that mean you could buy a monitor instead of TV with a receiver and ditch the BBC license fee?

  • Love the idea of Chromecast but not sure if you can stream media from your local devices...think everything has to be hosted in the cloud!

Could have wrong end of stick though...

  • i'm sure it has a dlna client in it.

  • I don't think you can stream local media, at least as announced.

  • Does that mean you could buy a monitor instead of TV with a receiver and ditch the BBC license fee?

    Essentially I think you're right.

TV catch up >>> Chrome cast >>>> profit!

  • Does anyone know if the Galaxy Nexus's will support Bluetooth 4.0 once they have Jellybean 4.3? I know that they have chips that will do it, and believe that they have been certified for it, so I'm hoping so

Mainly as I'm tempted by Wahoo Blue HR Bluetooth Heart rate belt for iPhone 4S: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

Pretty sure you need a TV licence to watch TV as it's broadcast regardless of the delivery method or equipment you use to view, so you'd still need one.

  • Nope you don't need a tv licence to watch tv catch up.

  • "It has always been TVCatchup's position that only people who live in the very same region to which the original broadcast was intended, and also holding a TV licence, were entitled to watch the very same programmes on TVC as they would otherwise access via the broadcasters own separate web sites or other online services."
