  • Skip through this bad boy... lots of popular classical.

  • Before leaving my old job I exported my entire Outlook mailbox as a .pst file for future reference. What's the best way to now access the content? Can I set up a new Hotmail/Gmail address and import the .pst somehow?

Seem to be a lot of bodged solutions and workarounds online but not much consensus. Anybody on here done this with great success and little pain?

  • *double post.

  • Get Outlook, File > Open .pst file.

Mozilla's Thunderbird (free desktop email client) might read it?

  • hivemind,

i have a 7mm gap between the top of my steerer and the stem. is this safe? i know consensus is to actually have a bit more steerer popping up above the stem but more slammage cannot be achieved with the current setup.

could win 4mm with a lower stack headset (from fsa orbit equipe 28mm to cheapo con-tec 25,7mm) and lower stem (syntace, 38mm instead of the current kalloy 40) and win a couple of extra by facing a couple of mm of off the headtube.

or am i clutching at straws here?

  • What does removing bearing cover give you?

  • i do have another fork though, but ild prefer using this alpina one because of its ratty state. the other fork is a as new giant tsx fork.

annoyingly the pomp is a large whilst being advertised as a medium; the headtube length of the medium would leave ample steerer.

  • hmm ild guess another 2mm, but not ideal. actually have a tester #slamdatstem cover but that doesnt win much (i tried) because of the fatness of the bearing preload thingy on top of the top bearing. could possibly grind that down to win some extra mm but then all this is getting real bodgy..

  • Put a 7mm piece of steerer down the hole and ride it like you stole it.

  • i know consensus is to actually have a bit more steerer popping up above the stem

    Um...

  • no topcap gets it down to about 4mm.
testerthing ads a mm to that but one can still peep the bearing from the side so not much use really.

annoyingly again i also have quite a lot of play in the headset due to (presumably) using another fork race (correct chamfer, but with a cut so a bit more flexible in diameter) because the original one's fit was a bit too tight for the steerer.

i also have around a mm of space between forkcrown and headset. i reckon this is on purpose because i presume headset cup grinding on forkcrown wouldnt be much helping steering would it?

  • ...i actually had a lower "bearing preload thingy on top of the top bearing" in the spares box, and this freed enough space to put the tester slamdatslem topcap on without leaving a gap.
of course, this was not the end of my troubles, because it seems the tester cap has a yet so slightly too small an inner diameter to fit cleanly on the top cup and it rubs.
get the sanding paper out? fuck me..

edit: i'll just ride without the top cap for that pro look for now. on a pompino.. hell as said the frame might even turn out to big for me so all these steerer woes will then be gone. hopefully

  • i have a 7mm gap between the top of my steerer and the stem. is this safe?

Not really. Not as safe as it should be. I wouldn't be happy with it, at all.

could win 4mm with a lower stack headset (from fsa orbit equipe 28mm to cheapo con-tec 25,7mm) and lower stem (syntace, 38mm instead of the current kalloy 40)

Thomson X2 has a very low stack, about 35mm I think.

or am i clutching at straws here?

dunno. Whats so special about the fork that requires this level of bodge?

  • Turns out it was this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqmbz8W1-tA

Which was actually composed way back in ... 1995 :/

  • well cheapo is the criterium that is of the most importance.

frame was 35 quid shipped to berlin of off this parish. its ratty and cheap.

fork is an alpina vbrake that i already have. its ratty and cheap.

kalloy stem i already have. its cheap.

hence me wanting to pair them. ive got it now to 3/4mm with the kalloy stem, no top cap and smaller pre loader.
i could add a micro spacer on top of the bearing preload thingy to eliminate the rub of the slamdatstem and leave a micro lateral peekhole inbetween topcap and bearing.
and i could still win those 2mm with the syntace stem. is a 26mm though, so would have to nick the 26mm risers of off my other biek. or buy some 5er bars at the lbs.

  • it does seem the play in the headset has all but been eliminated in the process, so result either way.

  • it seems the tester cap has a yet so slightly too small an inner diameter to fit cleanly on the top cup

    Other sizes are available :)

  • is this safe?

Only one of the stem clamping bolts is actually doing anything. Given that it's a steel steerer, stem damage and headset loosening are more likely than steerer snappage, but I still wouldn't ride it in the condition shown in the pictures.

  • we're talking micrometers here i reckon, hence me thinking of getting the sanding paper out. i measure the same diameter with my analogue caliper between them.

  • i have it now at 3.5 2.5mm, and the whole bolt is now below the steerer end. plan is to win the extra two with the low stack syntace 26mm stem, and maybe lose a mm with a shaved tester topcap

    EDIT: poidh

  • Ahhh, the classic 90s...

  • Anyone got a link to the service manual with torques and stuff for the XTR M980 crankset?

Whichever Shimano tech docs site I'm searching is just coming up with an exploded diag. with no installation details.
