They're easy to service. I got the gf's another year or so of life each time I stripped it down. It now has a better Shimano freewheel fitted but will eventually need a proper regrease, repeat.

I didn't know you could get to the bearings? I presumed ChasnotRobert was talking about a single speed freewheel.
What does a pin tool actually look like? Googled it and got a freewheel lock nut and a pin spanner. Can't work out how either works to get to the bearings

Cheap freewheel is more likely to go wrong, I end up not putting cheap £5 one on customer bicycle and just the Shimano one.
However now that the Shimano one is more expensive, the Halo cost the same and is a lots better, so buy the Halo and run that.
Or ride fixed.

Is it possible to get a 46mm chainline with Shimano Alfine cranks?
Perhaps by mounting the ring in place of the guard?

Spider tabs are 5.5mm and the rings are 3.1mm, so moving to the outside would get the chainline to 51.3mm based on the nominal original chainline of 42.7mm. That's actually further out of line with 46mm than the inner position.
A flat adapter ring would allow you to fit a ring at very close to 46mm, since the spider tab inside face is at 44.3mm and you'd add half the chainring thickness by bolting a ring to the outside face of the adapter (or the other way round, outer face at 48.2mm minus half the ring thickness). See Cliff Voller's bike here for an example

Thanks, but that sounds expensive for what is intended to be a cost effective Winter/wet weather choice.
Planning to use a Velosolo converted disc hub, which are either 41mm or 46mm and it would have been nice to be able to use it on my other 46mm bikes.
They do sell 2mm sprocket spacers, so I'll either go with 43mm (and Alfine) or 46mm and Ultra Torque.

What 1" threadless headset has the lowest stack height, and how much is that stack height?
The TIME forks are too short, I found out after paying for the Cane Creek SC1 to be fitted. -_-

Thanks - I did wonder about that.
I don't really want to service anything; just want it to work. I'd be happy to replace each year or so but every couple of months seems a bit excessive.
Previous ones were left to their own devices so I thought I'd try a bit of TLC on this one but now see the error...
