  • could i build some more classic wheels to a comparable standard? (obviously not weight-wise)

It's actually pretty easy to build a classic wheel lighter than the Ellipses - they are not light. Open Pro on small flange Record/Phil/DA/Royce hubs with CX-Rays would come to about 200g less than Ellipses, even using DT Comps should get you a lighter wheel than the Ellipse.

ah solid. cheers for the advice.

  • the Ritchey Torque Key does 5nm and Sigma Sport have a version which isn't 4mm only and has changable bits

I have a Ritchey Torqkey on the table in front of me- sold to me by Evans on the cut to tighten up all my 5mm bolts.

Discovering that the bit was not removable was a moment of frustration I will admit.

I'll have a look on the Sigma sport website, thanks.

EDIT|| Sigma sport show the Ritchey Torqkey, but it's out of stock. They don't show any others.

  • What is a good but affordable torque wrench to get?

Define affordable. You can get a Norbar for about £77 http://www.totalcycling.com/index.php/product/norbar_4_20.html?action=currency&id=GBP , which is the same wrench as the Syntace one I use https://www.starbike.com/php/product_info.php?lang=en&pid=6048

If you can't afford either of those, you probably can't really afford the quality of handlebars which need that level of assembly precision.

  • Ritchey WCS Carbon Evo's, max torque of 5 Nm before they splinter into a million fragments.

I take it that you are recommending the Norbar?

  • How do I get rid of the stench of garlic from my breath?

    chew some parsley

  • I need a modest torque wrench that can do 5 and 7 Nm in order to tighten controls, stem and seatpost.

I'm recommending anything which comes with a proper calibration certificate, of which the Norbar one is an example.

The BBB TorqueFix does the job for 55 when I bought. I had one but sold it. It doesn't do work for undoing/reverse thread but there aren't any screws or bolts that are reverse which need to be measured at the lower torque wrench ranges. Or just go to B&Q for a cheap one around £30 --- don't know what the error is on it though

  • I just bought the one that MDCC_Tester linked to, seemed churlish not to after he went to the trouble of looking it up

  • Damn, I would have linked to something with an affiliate code that paid me money if I'd known.

  • chew some parsley

    Chew a coffee bean.

  • Also, what is the cheapest place to get a CycleOps Fluid2 trainer- I think Amazon is winning with £183 delivered so far?

Wasn't someone on here selling on of those or something similar? Nihmbus I think.

If you'd like to make some money and have a rear wheel with a Shimano hub for sale do let me know, i need something to use on the turbo trainer.

  • Yeah you missed out mdcc_tester. Fair enough dammit that one does look good. I had to replace mine with the park tools low torque wrench after I sold it because I couldn't do without but I got that due to a really good deal from US that still kept it cheaper than other comparable ones for the price plus duty

EDIT: damn...that one does appear to be really good

  • the slightly better norbar is this one

    Norbar 11037 Torque wrench, 1/4" ratchet, adjustable, 1-20 N.m

slightly wider range and is meant to be a little more durable

  • Are all Cinelli quill stems 26.4mm?

  • Buy it, use it, send it back. Bingo.

Or pop down with the bike down to the guy who's fixing your car and use his torque wrench. Should have a decent one working on cylinder heads?

  • No, 1A is 26.0

  • Thanks!

Two things: one, most car mechanics use torque wrenches with a bit more power than what a bicycle mechanic does (I'm assuming, it's a long story involving the RAAM, a borrowed wrench and a fucked carbon stem, fortunitly it wasn't my fault).

Do not go to a mechanic, any mechanic and ask to borrow a tool that costs more that £2.
They are actually a finite resource, especially if lended out willy-nilly.

  • No, 1A is 26.0

Late 1As might be 26.0, but they were 26.4 in my young day. You can't tell the clamp size from the model except for those models which were made exclusively either before or after Cinelli switched from 26.4 to 26.0

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there was a 25.4mm Grammo quill for mountain bikes.

Does anything on a bike do up to 1-3 Nm?

  • Anyone know anything about simplon bikes? Any good?
