  • What tool do I need for centerlock disc on SP dyno hub? The thru axle is taking up the space a normal cassette lockring tool would slot into, only the small spline gaps are accessible.

  • Nevermind. I need a different lockring and tool to suit thru axle hubs.

  • 11spd road cassette doesn't fit DTswiss 350 hub. Why? They said it would. Free hub body is 37mm wide it seems.

  • You need a BB tool to tighten that lockring.

  • Looking for suggestions on tyre pressure for my commuter/work bike. Surly Straggler on 700x45c semi-slicks.

been riding 60 just now but they're pretty hard. how low can I go without it being sloppy...

  • I'd be starting at 45.

  • I'll drop it down,

Forgot to say I'm around 70kg

  • how low can I go without it being sloppy

Depends a bit on the rim width, but @umop3pisdn 's starting suggestion sounds reasonable, and on the right rims you could probably go down to 35f/42r without any trouble. The best answer is to try it and see what you like, as personal preference is part of the equation.

  • Definitely 40psi.

This is where you can try and find the right pressure where it's not too squrimy but not jarring.

  • Try this calculator should give you some idea.
Something like 35 psi looks good depending on your weight etc.

  • No, I need a lockring for a thru-axle hub. Why they don't include one with 160mm MTB rotors that are quite likely to be used on thru-axle hubs, I don't know.

  • No, I need a lockring for a thru-axle hub

To be fair to Ed, your first question was "What tool do I need?", to which he gave the correct answer.

It's really for the hub manufacturer to supply the appropriate lock ring, as you re-use it when you replace your rotors so it has no business being packaged with the consumable part.

  • Well he's still wrong because the BB tool wouldn't fit the QR version lock ring I have.
Also, my second post answered my question 2hrs before his response. Thanks for playing but the jackpot rolls over for another week.

Shutter Precision need to sort their lock ring supplies out. Too late for me to hassle them about it, I've found a 6-bolt converter that includes lockring for less £ than just the lockring I need. Stupid fucking disc brakes.

  • Well he's still wrong because the BB tool wouldn't fit the QR version lock ring I have

Depends which BB tool. Some Miche and Stronglight BBs use the HG lockring tool as used for small pattern centrelock lock rings. Some QR hubs (Fulcrum) use the HT2/GXP/UT BB tool for the Centrelock lock ring. Basically, there's no way for Ed to be wrong here :-)

  • There is, because the lockring I have uses a cassette tool, not a BB tool. There is no BB on earth that would have a tool small enough to fit INSIDE the lock ring.

    Thankyoucomeagain... #hippyisalwaysright

  • There is no BB on earth that would have a tool small enough to fit INSIDE the lock ring

I have a Stronglight BB right here in front of me which uses exactly that tool.

  • Yeah, but it won't fit my wheel because the thru-axle takes up the space where the tool goes!

Hence me needing a different lockring, which I have ordered, which renders this whole conversation pointless. But I'm tired and not interested in actual work yet so we can go on and on in circles if you'd like, you know I'm good for it.

  • it won't fit my wheel because the thru-axle takes up the space where the tool goes

That's a different question. Just admit that Ed was right, because when he said that a BB tool fits a CL lockring, he was correct as far as he went because for each type of CL lockring, there is at least one BB which uses the same tool :-)

  • where can I buy pure acetone and Isopropanol?

  • "What tool do I need for centerlock disc on SP dyno hub? The thru axle is taking up the space a normal cassette lockring tool would slot into, only the small spline gaps are accessible."

    This was the question.

His answer is wrong because the tool required can be a cassette tool OR a BB tool depending on the hub in question.

You're more than welcome to try and tighten the lockring with a BB tool. I'll come and visit you in 1000 years when you've worn the hub body to dust and the lockring isn't any tighter.

  • How soon do you need it?

    Maplin sells IPA at £15/litre.

Darrent sells IPA at £2.10/litre and Acetone at £2.26/litre.

  • Some chemists might do it. But it was in Oz last time I got any.

  • Anything I've found off the shelf had been watered down.

  • Darrent will do, thanks!

  • It wasn't off the shelf. They filled brown glassware from behind the scenes.
It was just for cleaning arrows so I don't know purity but it did the job.
School chem labs are another source for this kind of thing if you know a teacher or lab tech.
