I think when it got gritty it just ground its way into the frame

Happens with pretty much all bikepacking luggage that mounts directly to your frame/fork/seatpost/bars etc.

Helitape seems to be the common way of avoiding that/protecting the frame but it requires a bit of planning and patience if you want it to look neat.

Where is the cheapest place to get some helitape? I've been meaning to get some for my cranks.

eBay probably, this was posted in a deals/bargains thread on another bike forum a few days ago, no idea if it's actually a good deal (or any good!) though...

thats my problem, I don't know if some stuff is better that other stuff and there is just so much stuff on ebay to trawl through.
