  • I hate everybody too but I hate myself more so I still hate them less than me.

Just read that polystyrene, regardless of density, is a poor sound or vibration isolator.

Looking into types of foam now.

Tbh, haven't even asked them downstairs what it sounds like when we are using it yet.

  • you want something like a Drum riser - plenty of diy instructions around.

Basically trying to decouple the turbo (instead of the drum) from the floor

  • Do you have a turbo specific tyre?

  • Do you have a turbo specific tyre?

No but I'm well aware that this makes a big difference to noise levels.

Ideally we'd have a turbo wheel that we could swap between our bikes but Jana has 10spd 105 on her road bike and I have 11spd Ultegra. I assume that this means that we can't share a turbo wheel that would be fitted with a turbo tyre.

Would a turbo tyre really make that much of a difference to vibration levels?

    Cheers mate, will research.

  • Do you have a balcony?

  • Sadly not.

  • Get a turbo wheel with an 11 speed freehub and spacer.

Cassettes take no time to change - and you probably want to do that anyway if you're swapping between bikes, as they'll both have different chain wear, and using three cassettes across two chains seems like a Bad Idea.

Can't be arsed with changing cassettes each time we want to swap bikes.

Jana doesn't use turbo as much as I do anyway. I'll get a turbo tyre for my bike and see what happens.

You never know, it might make all the difference in the amount of vibration being generated, which isn't huge to be honest.

No (unless you are using a cx tyre!) - and can sometimes be louder!

  • Get thee to ye olde SJS shoppe!

I bought some Shimano "adjustment blocks" for my friend's eight year old.

Different flavours depending on group and available (from memory) in two different sizes.

    Ta da!

Thanks - I don't see a Shimano 105 5700 Triple on that list - could I use a similar adjustment block like ultegra? Also, would I have to loosen the brake cable as this would effectively bring the lever in more.

Finally, is there padding I can buy under the lever? can't find any of these on SJS, but not sure what to search for!

  • Sorry, can't help: fitted cross-top levers in the end.

You now know as much as I do...

  • Turbos eat tyres pretty rapidly too.

  • I had a similar problem when I lived in a house share; fortunately I had two pairs of slippers (the big padded ones from most supermarkets, usually have a cartoon character stitched to the front) so just put one under each foot of the turbo - got rid of 90% of the turbo rattle & made it more secure on the wooded floor. I appreciate you may be after something a little more permanent but it could help for the short term.

  • Sadly not.

    you haz a mezzanine.

You can also tweak the system by making sure the turbo support points are on a joist, and close to the wall, to maximise the rigidity of the support. This minimises the amplitude of the signal imparted to the sounding board, aka the floor surface.

  • What's the best treatment for paronychia AKA infection between the finger and nail? (I don't think it's an ingrowing nail.)

I'd rather not have to take antibiotics for such a stupidly small thing, but the pain woke me up three times last night and it's now bright red, hot and three times its normal size and it's bloody kills if I touch it.

    Paging Snotty Otter!

  • Whatever could you mean?

  • Both nerged and reported for inappropriate behaviour, and DTM.

    ;)

  • But srsly. Owwww. :(

  • Is this that thing where you heat up a small drill bit so it's both sterile and cauterising then drill though the nail until the pressure is released?

Okay, nope, just checked and it's not. Like I said with the codeine, I am definitely not a doctor.

  • Drillbit?!

Suitably sharp pin should be drastic enough to lance it...

  • I just leave em to go yellowish and squeeze the fuckers.

  • salt water bath it, if its really swollen drain it first. drill bit is overly aggressive as you don't need to go through nail just target swelling
