  • There's not exactly a lot of choice when it comes to track cranks without a square taper.

    Just saying.

    DA 7710 or Omniums?

    You've just proved his point.

  • 2! That's a choice!

What did the 5 fingers say to the face?

  • Do I spend my student loan on a 3d printer?

How can I make cost/profit projections*?

*I know nothing about bidness, but off the top off my head I think it will pay for itself in a few years based on £1000 investment/100 £15 jobs.

  • A while ago I sent a rambling speculative email to the head of a department at my dream company, a production company based in soho but with offices all over the world. I would kill to work for them. I received an out of office autoreply at the time saying the person in question would be back this week.

Today I recieved an email from them asking for a showreel.

Many shades of awesome. However, I have never been asked for a showreel before and the kind of work I do isn't really show-reel conducive. I.e. I do news producing/reporting, they do commercial and music video.

Are they looking for something visual? Or are they actually going to sit and listen to a selection of five minute reports>? Or do I give selected excerpts from the reports?

Do I include stuff from other projects other the years that were more relevant, even though it would only be..a shot here, a shot there?

  • what would be a good choice of (700c) rim width if I would want to run 30mm or 32mm tyres on my randonneur bike?

Minimum 23mm overall width, and you could go up to 30mm. Typical choice, per EEI, would be Mavic Ax19, there's a choice of three 23-24mm wide rims at different price points. Rigida Grizzly also has a good rep as a touring rim too, especially the CSS ceramic version.

  • Send them the best of the stuff you do, with a c.v if you haven't sent it already. They will appreciate what you've been working on, and will spot good professional work for what it is if they are any cop. Mention in your cover message/letter that you are aware that it's off-genre, but that you relish the opportunity to work in the new area. Or some shit like that.

No point in having a half-arsed stab at something new just for this.

That said, I know nothing about this specific field, but have done a lot of "talent recruiting', and would certainly approach it this way; quality is quality.

What are you going to print?

Would that give the game away?

  • £100 notes

  • The risk is that you shell out, then 3d printers suddenly get cheaper/better and you can no-longer demand £15 per print.

The risk of not doing it is that you don't get a printer to play with, don't get to meet the interesting people who would want to use it, don't get the experience of trying to make it pay for itself, and time passes you by.

What sort of printer are you looking at?

that will be my fear, if this are like DVD or Blue Rays or CDs (back in the days) every 4 months they will lose 15% until it reach a price everybody can afford

    Internetting question.

  • I just don't get allot of the memes, and that's one I'm still struggling to properly work out.

  • heres a tip---dont try too hard or youll end up like spotter.

  • allot is not a word

  • Oh.... I get it!

Sorry I'm still at work, bit tired... time to go home.

    Question still stands tho.**

  • allot is not a word

    Really?

    ;)

  • Great blog.

  • ^ I note that she has just done a fresh one.

    • a fresh post not a big turd
      (poor fucking benny)
  • What are you going to print?

No idea yet, bits and pieces here and there. I'm thinking of doing my major project at uni on open source manufacturing next year at uni though so having a 3d printer now and getting involved in what's happening would be good anyway.

They have just got suddenly cheaper (25k down to 1k) but this is only because of the DIY/hack community. It's still in its infancy at the moment and takes a certain amount of nerdyness to get involved with. I take your point about it becoming more common though.

The printer in question is the latest one from hackerbot

This won't happen for a long time, the price won't drop significantly anymore and I can't see them ever becoming household objects (although it would be fucking rad if they were). It's a pretty specialist bit of kit and has only just started to become accessible to 'normal' people and hobbyists but it will never be a standard office gadget.

Thanks for the questions though everyone, given me some stuff to start thinking about. Turns out my mum did a business diploma in her past and has given me a shit load of things to find out.
